Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 15 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only black (0059) is still made by Ístex. Dark sienna (9118), the main colour, vanilla (9718) and golden green (9240) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 0867 chocolate heather for dark sienna — a dark brown heather of the same depth, but less red than the cardigan looks in the photo, where low sun warms every colour; 1235 ray of light for vanilla — a pale warm cream with a slight peach tint, where the vanilla in the photo looks more yellow; and 1230 highland green for golden green — a little browner than the olive green in the photo. If you would like a redder body, sheep sorrel (1237) is a redder dark shade.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 105, 108, 114, 120 and 126 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body is knitted 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm to the underarm. Its 133 to 161 stitches, leaving out the 2 purl stitches at the cut, come to about 102 to 124 cm at the pattern’s gauge before a front band is added (our check), so the chest is the buttoned cardigan’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: dark sienna (9118) 6 (7, 7, 8, 8), vanilla (9718) 2, golden green (9240) 1 and black (0059) 1 in every size — 10 balls in XS, 11 in S and M, 12 in L and XL. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. The body and yoke are knitted in the round with a purl stitch at each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each purl stitch, knit the button band, and only then cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, knitting the first and last stitch of every body and yoke row — then there is nothing to cut.
How do the women’s and men’s versions differ?
Only in the sleeves and the buttons. Women’s sleeves are increased every 8th round to 41 (43, 43, 45, 45) cm, men’s every 9th round to 46 (48, 48, 50, 50) cm. For women the buttonholes go on the right front, for men on the left. The yarn amounts are the same. The cardigan uses 6 (6, 7, 7, 7) buttons, which are not included; the pattern gives no size. The first buttonhole is in the welt and the last in the neckband, 1.5 cm above the top of the band.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. At the underarms, in sizes XS, M and XL each sleeve puts one stitch more on the holder than the body (10 against 9 in XS), so you graft one stitch more on the sleeve side; ease it in (our suggestion). The neckband count of 69 (69, 69, 77, 77) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The black polo neck under it and the black trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and most of the instructions, a page with the buttonhole band, the neckband, the three charts and the key, and Ístex’s back cover.
