The girl’s own grey sweater is another pattern (Lopi 18 no. 6), not part of this kit, and the doll’s dark trousers are not part of the pattern

Lopi 18 No. 13 — your questions, answered

What size doll does it fit?
The pattern gives only the sweater’s own measurements — chest 40 cm, length 17 cm to the centre front neck, sleeves 10 cm to the underarm — and names no doll. The doll in the photos looks like a common 18-inch (46 cm) play doll (our estimate). The size is also close to our Rós doll sweater, whose pattern is written for a 46 cm doll with a 39 cm chest. Measure your doll’s chest before you start; the sweater should be a few centimetres wider (our suggestion). It is not a size for a child.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes, a lot. The pattern prints an amount only for the main colour — 1 ball of white. For the other three colours it gives no amount; each is used for just a few rounds, so the kit has 1 ball of each, the smallest amount we can send (our choice). That is 4 balls, 200 g, for a doll’s sweater that weighs roughly 50 g — by our estimate about 150 g will be left over, most of it in the three contrast colours.
How does it go over the doll’s head?
The yoke is knitted in the round, but the neckband is knitted back and forth, so it leaves a short opening at one side, closed with a button and a loop of 8 crocheted chains “on left side”. The pattern doesn’t say exactly where the opening is. By our reading it is where the round begins — at the left side, between the back and the first sleeve — and it is only as deep as the neckband: 4 rows, under 2 cm (our calculation). If your doll’s head is large, you can knit the last few rounds of the yoke back and forth as well, to make the opening longer, as the Rós doll sweater does (our suggestion). The 3 mm crochet hook and the button are not included.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The pattern says “Read Tension on page 3”, but page 3 holds only the charts — the tension is the one printed under Materials: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm on 5 mm needles. When the yoke is joined, the front has 29 stitches and the back 31; the total of 96 is right, so knit it as written. Rounds 3 and 5 of the yoke chart use three colours at once (our count of the chart); the other rounds use two. The narrow border of small points above the rib is oatmeal on white, so it shows only softly. At the end, the pattern has you tack down the loose strands inside the sleeve border with the main colour.
Which photo shows this version?
The girl holding the doll in the white sweater — this is the only photo of Design 13, and it is a small one. The girl’s own grey sweater is another pattern in the same book (Lopi 18 no. 6) and is not part of this kit. The large photo of a laughing child with a doll shows Design 12 from the same leaflet, the crimson red doll sweater, sold as a separate kit (Lopi 18 No. 12).
What does the kit with needles include?
5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles; 4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern asks for 3¾ mm (US 5) double-pointed needles for the ribs and the neckband. We don’t stock that size, so the kit has 4 mm in their place (our substitute) — a quarter of a millimetre larger, which keeps the neckband a little stretchier for pulling over the doll’s head. If you have 3¾ mm needles, you can use them. The 3 mm crochet hook for the button loop and the button are not included.
