A laughing child on a hillside carries a doll in Design 12 — the crimson doll sweater with a round yoke of purple, green and yellow zigzags, and purple ribs and small purple points at the hem and cuffs, shown in the pattern’s original colours (iris, grass and goldenrod are no longer made). The child’s own red sweater and hat are another pattern (Lopi 18 no. 14); the doll’s dark trousers and the child’s trousers are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 12 & 13 — your questions, answered

What are No. 12 and No. 13?
Two numbers in Ístex’s Lopi 18 book for the same doll sweater in two colourways, printed in one leaflet as Design 12 and Design 13: the same size, instructions and charts, with a colour key for each. Design 12 is crimson — M 9434 crimson, A 9440 iris, B 9444 grass and C 9435 goldenrod. Design 13 is white — M 0051 white, A 0085 oatmeal, B 0053 acorn and C 0052 black sheep. Only the edges differ: Design 12 casts on and works the ribs and the whole neckband in A; Design 13 casts on in C, stripes the rib 1 round C and 2 rounds B, and finishes the neckband and the button loop in C.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For Design 13, yes — white (0051), oatmeal (0085), acorn (0053) and black sheep (0052) are all still made by Ístex; our shop calls the last three oatmeal heather, acorn heather and black sheep heather. For Design 12, only crimson (9434) is — our shop calls it crimson red. Iris (9440), grass (9444) and goldenrod (9435) are no longer made. Our red No. 12 kit uses 1414 violet heather for iris — the same purple but clearly darker — 1406 spring green heather for grass — the same grass green, lighter and a little more yellow — and 1703 mimosa for goldenrod, close to the golden yellow, a little lighter and softer. Go by the colour numbers.
What size doll does it fit?
The pattern gives only the sweater’s own measurements — chest 40 cm, length 17 cm to the centre front neck, sleeves 10 cm to the underarm — and names no doll. The doll in the photos looks like a common 18-inch (46 cm) play doll (our estimate). The size is also close to Ístex’s Rós doll sweater (Lopi 29 no. 5), whose pattern is written for a 46 cm doll with a 39 cm chest. Measure your doll’s chest before you start; the sweater should be several centimetres wider (our suggestion). It is not a size for a child.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. The pattern prints 1 ball of the main colour — crimson for Design 12, white for Design 13 — and no amount for the other three colours, which are used only for the edges and the colour pattern. One ball of each is more than enough: by our estimate the whole sweater weighs roughly 50 g.
How does it go over the doll’s head?
The yoke is knitted in the round, but the neckband is knitted back and forth, so it leaves a short opening at one side, closed with a button and a loop of 8 crocheted chains “on left side”. The pattern doesn’t say exactly where the opening is. By our reading it is where the round begins — at the left side, between the back and the first sleeve — and it is only as deep as the neckband: 4 rows, under 2 cm (our calculation). If your doll’s head is large, you can knit the last few rounds of the yoke back and forth as well, to make the opening longer (our suggestion).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The pattern says “Read Tension on page 3”, but page 3 holds only the charts — the tension is the one printed under the materials: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm on 5 mm needles. When the yoke is joined, the front has 29 stitches and the back 31; the total of 96 is right, so knit it as written. Rounds 3 and 5 of the yoke chart use three colours at once (our count of the chart); the other rounds use two. In Design 13 the border above the rib is oatmeal on white, so it shows only softly. At the end, the pattern has you tack down the loose strands inside the sleeve border with the main colour.
Which photo shows which design?
The large photo of a laughing child carrying a doll shows Design 12, the crimson doll sweater (marked 12 on the leaflet’s cover). The child’s own red sweater and hat are another pattern in the same book, Lopi 18 no. 14 (marked 14), and the doll’s trousers and the child’s trousers are not part of this pattern. The smaller photo shows Design 13, the white doll sweater (marked 13); the girl’s grey sweater is Lopi 18 no. 6 (marked 6), and the doll’s dark trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (Design 12); a page with a small photo of Design 13, the materials for both designs, the sizes, tension and all the instructions; a page with both charts and a key for each design; and Ístex’s back cover.
