Lopi 18 No. 11 — your questions, answered

Why are five colours different from the pattern?
Spruce tweed (0168), antique gold (9332), copper (9384), burnt red (9389) and dusty teal (9305) are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The photo was taken in strong, warm low sun, which makes every colour look warmer than the yarn. Garden green (1231) takes the place of spruce tweed. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves, the background of the yoke and the ribbed outside of the neckband — 7 of the 12 balls. It is a plain leaf-green heather, without the yellow, red and turquoise flecks of the tweed, and it is lighter and a little yellower than the body in the photo. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of antique gold. It is colour A, the crosses: the small gold crosses at the top of the border and the gold diamonds and shapes in the yoke. It is a darker, more muted mustard gold than the bright orange-gold in the photo. Amber heather (9971) takes the place of copper. It is colour B, the filled dots: the orange rows in the border and the orange shapes in the yoke. It is a rust-orange heather, darker and redder than the orange in the photo. Happy red (0047) takes the place of burnt red. It is colour C, the small dots: the red rows in the border and yoke and the red dots near the neck. It is a clear red, clearly darker and cooler than the warm red in the photo. Arctic exposure (1232) takes the place of dusty teal. It is colour E, which is not in the chart key: the purl edges at the hem and cuffs, and the top half of the neckband — the purl rounds at the fold and the rib that folds inside. It is a pale aqua heather, clearly lighter and bluer than the greyed sea-green edges in the photo; we chose a light shade so the edges still stand out against the green body, as they do in the photo. Teal heather (9967) is a teal by name, but it is a dark petrol, about as dark as the body, so the edges would disappear. Quiet purple (0163), sold as dark soft purple, is still made and is the purple in the pattern — in the warm light of the photo it looks redder than the yarn. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, XS to L, with a chest of 98 to 117 cm, 63 to 71 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 37 to 41 cm. The pattern gives one sleeve length. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the chest measurement you want: XS is 98 cm round. In the photo it is worn loose, to the hip.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size L: 7 balls of garden green and 1 each of golden heather, amber heather, happy red, dark soft purple and arctic exposure — 12 balls. XS and S use 6 balls of garden green (11 balls in all).
Why do the edges roll?
The hem and cuffs start with 7 rounds of purl in arctic exposure, which roll to the right side, as in the photo. The pattern knits the body and sleeves 2 cm longer than the size table to allow for the roll; the lengths in the instructions already include it.
Anything to watch for?
Two small things. Colour E — arctic exposure in this kit — is not in the chart key, because it is used only for the purl edges and the top half of the neckband. The sleeve instructions have a typo, “4(4:5:5)stst” — it means stitches.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The brown trousers are not.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. In 6 mm the pattern lists only circular needles, but each sleeve has just 40 stitches when it changes to 6 mm — about 31 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Stitch holders and the tapestry needle are not included.
