Lopi 12 No. 9 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Loden green (9239) and golden green (9240) are no longer made by Ístex. The leaflet prints only the codes; loden green and golden green are Ístex’s names for them in its Lopi 18 leaflets. This kit has cypress green heather (9966) in place of loden green. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, sleeves, rib, neckband, the dark green in the yoke, and the whole hat and gloves. It is a very dark green heather with small coloured flecks, close to the dark olive green in the photo. Highland green (1230) takes the place of golden green. It is colour B, the half-filled squares: the mid-green fill in the yoke and in the borders. Highland green is darker and browner than the khaki green in the photo, so those shapes stand out less from the dark green and the yoke has less contrast than in the photo. For a brighter yoke, chartreuse green heather (9965) is lighter and much more yellow than the original. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102 to 120 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The hat comes in two sizes, M and L, and the gloves in three, S, M and L. The pattern gives no head or hand measurements; by the stitch counts the hat is about 48.5 or 51 cm round and the gloves about 18.5, 21.5 or 24.5 cm round (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL plus the hat and gloves: 10 balls of cypress green heather (8 for the sweater, 1 for the hat, 1 for the gloves), 3 of light ash heather and 2 of highland green — 15 balls. For the sweater, XS and S use 7 balls of the main colour, 2 of light ash and 1 of highland green; M and L use 8, 2 and 1. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Are the hat and gloves in the kit?
Yes — both are on page 3 of the same pattern, knitted in the main colour, one ball each. The hat is plain stocking stitch on 6 mm double-pointed needles with no rib, so its edge rolls up, as in the photo. The fingerless gloves have a ribbed cuff and top edge; the thumb opening is made by knitting a few stitches with a scrap of contrast yarn, which you later pull out to pick up the stitches for a short thumb with a ribbed edge.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small things. The hat’s needles are given in Icelandic, “Sokkaprjónar nr. 6” — that means 6 mm double-pointed needles. In the gloves, the count after the increase is printed “24(28:32)L.” — the L should read sts. In sizes S and L each sleeve puts 11 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 10, so you graft 11 stitches to 10 and ease in the extra one. The contrast yarn and the 2 stitch markers the gloves need are not in the materials list.
Is the pink sweater in the photo included?
No — the woman’s magenta sweater and scarf are not part of this pattern, and neither are the man’s jeans. The sweater, hat and glove the man wears are.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The sweater’s list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles — they are listed for the hat and gloves — but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff and has only 42 to 48 stitches, too few to go round a 40 cm circular, so they are used there too. Stitch holders, markers and contrast yarn are not included.
