Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 9 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only the pale grey. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0054 (A — the pale grey of the scallops and the border) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it light ash heather. 9239 (M — the body, sleeves, rib, neckband, the dark green in the yoke, and the whole hat and gloves) and 9240 (B — the khaki green fill in the yoke and the border) are no longer made; Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call them loden green and golden green. Our kit for this pattern uses 9966 cypress green heather for 9239 — a very dark green heather with small coloured flecks, close to the dark olive green in the photo — and 1230 highland green for 9240, darker and browner than the khaki green in the photo, so those shapes stand out less from the dark green.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the size you want the sweater to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The sweater: M (9239) 7 (7, 8, 8, 8), A (0054) 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) and B (9240) 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) — 10 (10, 11, 11, 13) balls. The hat and the gloves take one more ball of 9239 each. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
What sizes are the hat and gloves?
The hat comes in sizes M and L, cast on with 63 or 66 stitches; the gloves in S, M and L, with 24, 28 or 32 stitches above the cuff. The pattern gives no head or hand measurements; by the gauge the hat is about 48.5 or 51 cm round and the gloves about 18.5, 21.5 or 24.5 cm round (our calculation). The hat is stocking stitch with no rib, so its edge rolls up, as in the photo.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small things. In sizes S and L each sleeve puts 11 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 10, so you graft 11 stitches to 10 and ease in the extra one (our tip). The hat’s needles are printed in Icelandic, “Sokkaprjónar nr. 6” — 6 mm double-pointed needles. In the gloves, the count after the increase is printed “24(28:32)L.” — the L means stitches. The sweater’s needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so use the 6 mm double-pointed needles from the hat and gloves there too (our reading). The contrast yarn and the 2 stitch markers for the gloves are not in the materials list. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The man’s sweater, hat and fingerless glove are. His jeans, the top showing at his neck and the rope-wrapped pole across his body are not. The woman in front wears a different pattern, Lopi 12 no. 7 — the same woman, in the same sweater, is on the cover of the Lopi 12 no. 7 leaflet — and her scarf is not part of either.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the body, the start of the sleeves and the yoke chart with its key; a page with the rest of the sweater, the hat and the gloves with their own photo, and the border chart; and Ístex’s back cover.
