Smiling woman on the bow of a boat in the Lopi 12 no. 7 sweater — a dark plum body, raspberry rib at the hem and cuffs, and a raspberry yoke with pink ovals ringed in plum and raspberry rays up to the neck (shown in the original colours, in an old film photo — this kit has bordeaux heather, clearly darker, fuchsia heather and a brighter dark magenta in their place). Her scarf and red trousers are not part of the pattern; the man behind her wears Lopi 12 no. 9, a different pattern

Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 7 — your questions, answered

Why are all three colours different from the pattern?
All three colours in this pattern are no longer made by Ístex. The leaflet prints only the codes; eggplant (9316) and burgundy (9210) are Ístex’s names for two of them in its Lopi 18 leaflets, and we have found no English name for the pink accent (9209). Bordeaux heather (9961) takes the place of eggplant. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the background of the yoke. It is a dark wine-red heather, clearly darker than the plum body in the photo; we chose a dark shade so the raspberry pattern still stands out against it. Fuchsia heather (9969) takes the place of burgundy, which in this photo is a raspberry red. It is colour A, the filled dots: the rib at the hem and cuffs, the neckband and most of the pattern in the border and yoke. It is the closest raspberry shade made today, with a heathered look. Dark magenta (1240) takes the place of 9209, the pink-violet accent. It is colour B, the half-filled squares: the pink flecks and dashes in the border and yoke, and the pink inside the ovals. It is a brighter, more vivid pink than the soft pink in the photo. The photo is an old film photo, so none of its colours can be matched exactly; your sweater will look different — darker in the body and brighter in the pink. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the chest measurement you want: XS is 98 cm round.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 7 balls of bordeaux heather, 3 of fuchsia heather and 1 of dark magenta — 11 balls. XS and S use 5 balls of bordeaux heather, M and L use 6. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
The chart key says “90” and “84” — which colours are those?
Misprints: the key labels the empty square “90” and the filled dot “84”, and neither code is in the materials list. The instructions knit the body above the border and the whole yoke in M and the rib and neckband in A, and the photo shows a dark background with raspberry rib and pattern, so the empty squares are M — bordeaux heather in this kit — and the dots are A — fuchsia heather (our reading). The half-filled square, “209”, is B — dark magenta.
Anything else to watch for?
In sizes S and M the pattern itself says Chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 44 stitches do not divide by the 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. Knit on as written; the body and yoke work out in every size.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The printed scarf at her neck and the red trousers are not. The man behind her wears Lopi 12 no. 9, a different pattern, also sold as a kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Stitch holders and the tapestry needle are not included.
