Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 7 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
No — all three are no longer made by Ístex. The leaflet prints only the codes. 9316 (M: body, sleeves and the yoke background) is called eggplant, and 9210 (
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the width you want the sweater to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: M (9316) 5 (5, 6, 6, 7), A (9210) 3 and B (9209) 1 in every size — 9 balls in XS and S, 10 in M and L, 11 in XL. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
The chart key says “90” and “84” — which colours are those?
Misprints: the key labels the empty square “90” and the filled dot “84”, and neither code is in the materials list. The instructions knit the body above the border and the whole yoke in M and the rib and neckband in A, and the photo shows a dark background with raspberry rib and pattern, so the empty squares are M (9316) and the dots are A (9210) (our reading). The half-filled square, “209”, is B (9209).
Anything else to watch for?
In sizes S and M the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 44 stitches do not divide by the 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The printed scarf at her neck and the red trousers are not. The man behind her wears Lopi 12 no. 9, a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, instructions and the border chart, a page with the yoke chart, and Ístex’s back cover.
