Lopi 12 No. 33 — your questions, answered

Why are four colours different from the pattern?
Apple green (9212), bright fuchsia (9010), goldenrod (9213) and scarlet (0078) are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the codes; these are Ístex’s names for them in its Lopi 18 leaflets. Apple green (9983) takes the place of the old apple green. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the rib, body, sleeves, the green in the yoke, the neckband, the hat and the mitten cuffs. It is an olive-leaning apple green, clearly more yellow than the grass green in the photo. Dark magenta (1240) takes the place of bright fuchsia. It is colour B, the half-black squares: the magenta band and spikes in the yoke, the magenta in the borders and the hat band, and the mitten hands and thumbs. It is a hot pink-magenta — clearly pinker and less violet than the purple-magenta in the photo. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of goldenrod. It is colour C, the triangles: the gold diamonds and dots in the yoke, borders, hat and mittens. It is a mustard gold, clearly more orange than the clear yellow in the photo. Happy red (0047) takes the place of scarlet. It is colour D, the half-filled circles: the red band in the yoke, the red in the borders and the hat band, and the mitten tops. It is a clear red, darker than the red in the photo. Black (0059) is still made and is the black in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134 and 140 cm — with a chest of 78 to 92 cm, 42 to 54 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 35 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The hat is one size, 66 stitches round — about 51 cm (our calculation). The mittens come in three sizes, 110, 122/134 and 140 — about 15.5, 17 and 18.5 cm round the hand by the stitch counts (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 140 cm size plus the hat and mittens: 7 balls of apple green (5 for the sweater, 1 for the hat, 1 for the mittens), 2 of black and 1 each of dark magenta, golden heather and happy red — 12 balls. For the sweater alone, the 110 cm size uses 3 balls of apple green and 1 of black, the 122 cm size 4 and 1, and the 134 cm size 4 and 2. The hat and mitten lists give no amounts for their contrast colours, so they come from the sweater’s balls; by our estimate one ball each of dark magenta and happy red covers the yoke, the hat band and the mitten hands and tops. In this green version the mittens use apple green only for the ribbed cuffs, so most of the mittens’ ball of green will be left over (our reading).
Are the hat and mittens in the kit?
Yes — they are on pages 4 and 5 of the same pattern, and the kit holds their yarn. The hat is one size. Two ear flaps are knitted back and forth first; stitches are picked up across them, more are cast on between them, and the hat is knitted in the round with a 13-round patterned band and a gathered crown. Two cords, 25 cm long, are crocheted in chain stitch, changing colour with every stitch through all five colours, and sewn to the bottom of each ear flap — you need a 4.5 mm crochet hook, which is not included. In No. 33 the mittens have a green ribbed cuff, one black round, a magenta hand, a band of gold diamonds outlined in black above the thumb, and a red top. The thumb opening is knitted over a scrap of contrast yarn, which you later pull out to pick up the thumb stitches.
Is the pattern for both colour versions?
Yes — the leaflet has one set of instructions and charts for No. 33 (green) and No. 34 (charcoal), and the materials lists and chart key give the colours for each side by side; read the No. 33 column. This kit has the yarn for No. 33; No. 34 is sold as a separate kit, with no colours replaced.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. In the No. 33 column the chart key prints “378” for the main green, where the materials list says 9212; we read it as an older code for the same green (our reading). The other entries are short codes: “59”, “910”, “213” and “78” are black, bright fuchsia, goldenrod and scarlet — black, dark magenta, golden heather and happy red in this kit. The hat’s list prints “M 92120005 1”: the two versions’ codes run together, and it means 1 ball of the main colour. On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border chart “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion).
Which photos show this version?
The photo of the girl holding a black puppy: she wears No. 33 — the green sweater and the ear-flap hat, knitted in the original colours — and a magenta mitten shows at the lower right. Her red top and red trousers are not part of the pattern. In the cover photo by the sea, the girl on the left wears No. 34, the same set in charcoal and white, sold as a separate kit; the boy on the right wears Lopi 12 no. 32, a different pattern, also sold as its own kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves, the top of the yoke, the hat and the mittens. The 4.5 mm crochet hook for the hat cords, stitch holders and contrast yarn are not included.
