Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 33 & 34 — your questions, answered

What are No. 33 and No. 34?
Two numbers in Ístex’s Lopi 12 book for the same children’s set in two colourways, printed in one leaflet with one set of instructions and charts. Each number has a sweater, an ear-flap hat and mittens. The materials lists and the chart key give the colours for each side by side: No. 33 is M 9212 apple green, A 0059 black, B 9010 bright fuchsia, C 9213 goldenrod and D 0078 scarlet; No. 34 is M 0005 black heather, A 0051 white, B 0056 light gray, C 0053 acorn and D 0058 dark gray. The amounts are the same. Apart from the colours, they differ in two places: the border above the hem and cuffs (chart 1a, 5 rounds, for No. 33; chart 1b, 7 rounds, for No. 34) and the mittens — No. 33’s have a bright fuchsia hand and a scarlet top, No. 34’s are black heather with the full patterned band.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For No. 34, yes — black heather (0005), white (0051), light gray (0056), acorn (0053) and dark gray (0058) are all still made by Ístex; our shop calls them black heather, white, ash heather, acorn heather and dark grey heather, so go by the colour numbers. For No. 33, only black (0059) is. Apple green (9212), bright fuchsia (9010), goldenrod (9213) and scarlet (0078) are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the colour numbers; these names are Ístex’s own, from its Lopi 18 leaflets. Our green No. 33 kit uses 9983 apple green for 9212 — an olive-leaning apple green, clearly more yellow than the grass green in the photo; 1240 dark magenta for 9010 — a hot pink-magenta, clearly pinker and less violet than the purple-magenta in the photo; 9964 golden heather for 9213 — a mustard gold, clearly more orange than the clear yellow in the photo; and 0047 happy red for 0078 — a clear red, darker than the red in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
The sweater has four sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134 and 140 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88 and 92 cm, 42, 46, 50 and 54 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 25, 29, 33 and 35 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body’s 102 to 120 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The hat is one size, 66 stitches — about 51 cm round (our calculation). The mittens come in sizes 110, 122/134 and 140 — about 15.5, 17 and 18.5 cm round the hand (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both numbers. The sweater: M 3 (4, 4, 5), A 1 (1, 2, 2), and 1 ball each of B, C and D in every size — 7 (8, 9, 10) balls. The hat takes 1 more ball of M, and the mittens 1 more ball of M in any size. The hat and mitten lists also name A, B, C and D but give no amount — by our reading they come from what is left of the sweater’s balls. In No. 33 the mittens’ hand is B and the top D, so those two do the most work; by our estimate one ball of each still covers the sweater, the hat band and the mittens. And No. 33’s mittens use M only for the ribbed cuff, so most of that ball will be left over (our reading).
How are the hat and mittens made?
They are on pages 4 and 5 of the leaflet, with their charts (3 and 4) on page 3. The hat is one size. Two ear flaps are cast on with 22 stitches and knitted back and forth: two rows of rib, then on 6 mm they are decreased by 2 stitches at the centre of every row down to a point. 14 stitches are picked up across each flap, with 25 and 13 cast on between them (66 stitches), for 3 rounds of rib, a 13-round band from chart 3, M to 13 cm from the cast-on edge and a gathered crown. Two cords, 25 cm long, are crocheted in chain stitch with a 4.5 mm hook, changing colour with every stitch through all five colours, knotted at the end and sewn to the bottom of the ear flaps. The mittens have a K1, P1 rib cuff in M; then No. 33 knits one round of black, a bright fuchsia hand, rows 3 to 9 of chart 4 and a scarlet top, with the thumb in bright fuchsia, and No. 34 knits the hand, the top and the thumb in M with the whole 11-row band. The thumb opening is knitted over a scrap of contrast yarn, which you later pull out to pick up the thumb stitches.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints short codes. For No. 33 it prints “378” for the main green, where the materials list says 9212; we read it as an older code for the same green (our reading). “59”, “910”, “213” and “78” are 0059, 9010, 9213 and 0078. For No. 34, “05”, “51”, “56”, “53” and “58” are 0005, 0051, 0056, 0053 and 0058. The hat’s list prints “M 92120005 1”: the two numbers’ codes run together, and it means 1 ball of M. On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Which photo shows which number?
The girl holding a black puppy (on the leaflet’s back page) wears No. 33 — the sweater and the hat, in the original colours — and a bright fuchsia mitten shows at the lower right; her red top and red trousers are not part of the pattern. In the cover photo by the sea, the girl on the left, marked 12-34, wears No. 34 — the sweater, the hat and the mittens; her red scarf, the jeans and the fishing rod are not part of the pattern. The boy on the right, marked 12-32, wears Lopi 12 no. 32, a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo (No. 34, with the boy in Lopi 12 no. 32); a page with a small photo of No. 33, the sweater’s materials for both numbers, the sizes, tension, all the sweater instructions, the two border charts and the key; a page with the yoke chart, the hat and mitten charts and the key; the hat page, with a photo; the mittens page, with a photo; and a back page with the photo of No. 33 and Ístex’s address.
