Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 32 — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 134, 140, 152 and 164 cm — with a chest of 86 to 102 cm, 50 to 62 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 33 to 41 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 164 cm size plus the hat: 7 balls of oatmeal heather (5 for the sweater, 2 for the hat), 2 of black heather, 2 of white and 1 of acorn heather — 12 balls. For the sweater, the 134 and 140 cm sizes use 4 balls of oatmeal heather and one each of the other three colours; the 152 cm size uses 5 of oatmeal, 2 of black heather, 1 of white and 1 of acorn. The hat’s cord comes from the black heather.
Is the stocking hat in the kit?
Yes — it is on page 2 of the same pattern, one size, given in the No. 32 colours: 8 cm of K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm, then a straight tube of stocking stitch on 6 mm until the hat is 50 cm long, cast off straight. A cord crocheted from two strands of black heather is tied round it about 5 cm below the top, gathering it in. It is 62 stitches round — about 48 cm in stocking stitch (our calculation); the pattern gives no head size. Its 2 balls of oatmeal heather are in the kit. You need a 4.5 mm crochet hook for the cord, which is not included.
Is the pattern for both colour versions?
Yes — the leaflet has one set of instructions and charts for No. 31 (blue) and No. 32 (oatmeal). This kit has the yarn for the oatmeal No. 32 and the hat; the blue No. 31 is sold as a separate kit. All four colours of No. 32 are still made, so nothing in this kit is replaced.
Anything to watch for?
The chart key gives the colours for both versions side by side; read the No. 32 column — 85, 05, 51 and 53 are oatmeal heather, black heather, white and acorn heather. On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border chart “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 4-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In size 134 each sleeve puts 10 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 9, and in size 152 the sleeve 11 and the body 10 — graft them together and ease in the extra stitch.
Which photo shows this version?
The cover photo by the sea: the older boy, marked 12-32, wears No. 32 and the stocking hat. His green neck-warmer is not part of the pattern. The girl beside him, marked 12-34, wears a dark grey sweater and hat from a different pattern, not in this kit. In the field photo, the boy marked 12-31 wears the blue No. 31 — sold as a separate kit.
Who designed it?
The pattern names no designer — it is from Ístex’s Lopi 12.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 60 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are our addition: the materials list leaves them out, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 38 or 40 stitches — far too few to go round a 40 cm circular. For the hat, the pattern names 50 cm circular needles; the kit uses the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for the rib band and the 40 cm 6 mm circular for the tube. The crochet hook for the cord is not included.
