Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 31 & 32 — your questions, answered

What are No. 31 and No. 32?
Two numbers in Ístex’s Lopi 12 book for the same sweater in two colourways, printed in one leaflet with one set of instructions and charts, in the same four sizes. No. 31 is blue: M 9304, A 0059 black, B 0051 white and C 0078, a red. No. 32 is oatmeal: M 0085 oatmeal heather, A 0005 black heather, B 0051 white and C 0053 acorn heather. The materials list and the chart key give the codes for both side by side, and the yarn amounts are the same. The stocking hat is given only in the No. 32 colours.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For No. 32, yes — 0085, 0005, 0051 and 0053 are all still made by Ístex. For No. 31, two of the four are: 0059 black and 0051 white. The main blue, 9304, and the red, 0078, are no longer made. The leaflet prints only the colour numbers; it gives 9304 no name — in the photo it is a royal blue — and Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call 0078 scarlet. Our blue No. 31 kit uses 1234 blue tweed for 9304 — the same depth of blue, but with small white flecks — and 0047 happy red for 0078, close to the red in the photo. The names oatmeal heather, black heather and acorn heather are our shop’s, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 134, 140, 152 and 164 cm — with a chest of 86, 92, 98 and 102 cm, 50, 54, 58 and 62 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 33, 35, 38 and 41 cm to the underarm. The body is knitted 30 (33, 36, 38) cm to the underarm. Its 112 to 132 stitches come to 86 to 102 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same amounts for both numbers: M 4 (4, 5, 5), A 1 (1, 2, 2), B 1 (1, 1, 2) and C 1 in every size — 7 balls for 134 and 140 cm, 9 for 152 cm and 10 for 164 cm. The stocking hat takes 2 more balls of 0085 oatmeal heather; its cord is crocheted from 0005 black heather, for which the hat’s list gives no amount.
How is the stocking hat made?
It is on page 2 of the leaflet, in one size: 62 stitches on a 4.5 mm circular, 8 cm of K1, P1 rib, then a straight tube of stocking stitch on 6 mm until the hat is 50 cm long, cast off. A cord crocheted from two strands of black heather is tied round it about 5 cm below the cast-off edge, gathering in the top; in the photo the tied top hangs to one side. 62 stitches come to about 48 cm round at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation); the pattern gives no head size. The hat’s list names 4.5 mm and 6 mm circular needles in 50 cm and a 4.5 mm crochet hook.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 4-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 134 and 152 each sleeve puts 10 (11) stitches on the underarm holder but the body 9 (10); ease in the extra stitch when you graft (our suggestion). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 38 or 40 stitches — about 29 to 31 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The chart key prints the codes short: for No. 31, 59 is 0059, 51 is 0051 and 78 is 0078, and it prints “74” for the main blue, 9304 — we read it as an older code for the same colour (Lopi 12 no. 25 also keys 9304 as “74”); for No. 32, 85, 05, 51 and 53 are 0085, 0005, 0051 and 0053. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Which photo shows which number?
In the cover photo by the sea, the older boy marked 12-32 wears No. 32 and the stocking hat; the girl beside him, marked 12-34, wears a dark grey sweater and hat from a different pattern. In the field photo, the boy marked 12-31 wears No. 31 in its original blue and red; the girl in front, marked 12-30, wears Lopi 12 no. 30, a different pattern. The green neck-warmer, the bandana, the red neckerchief, the jeans and the dark trousers are not part of this pattern.
Who designed it?
The leaflet names no designer — it is an Ístex pattern from Lopi 12.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (No. 32 and the stocking hat), a page with a small photo of No. 31, the materials for both numbers, the sizes, all the sweater instructions and the hat with its own photo, a page with both charts and the key, and a back page with the photo of No. 31 and Ístex’s address.
