Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 31 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
The royal blue (9304) and the scarlet (0078) of No. 31 are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The pattern prints no name for the blue — in the photo it is a royal blue — and only the code for the red; scarlet is Ístex’s name for 0078 in its Lopi 18 leaflets. This kit has blue tweed (1234) in place of the royal blue. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the rib, body, sleeves, yoke background and neckband. It is the same depth of blue, but a tweed with small white flecks that the original does not have, so the sweater will look a little speckled. If you would rather not have the flecks, space blue (1233) is a plain alternative — a more vivid, slightly purple blue heather, further from the photo than blue tweed. Happy red (0047) takes the place of the scarlet. It is colour C, the triangles in the yoke chart: the red stripe across the white spikes and the red near the neck. It is close to the red in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 134, 140, 152 and 164 cm — with a chest of 86 to 102 cm, 50 to 62 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 33 to 41 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 164 cm size: 5 balls of blue tweed, 2 of black, 2 of white and 1 of happy red — 10 balls. The 134 and 140 cm sizes use 4 balls of blue tweed and one each of the other three colours; the 152 cm size uses 5 of blue tweed, 2 of black, 1 of white and 1 of red.
Is the pattern for both colour versions? Is there a hat?
Yes — the leaflet has one set of instructions and charts for No. 31 (blue) and No. 32 (oatmeal), and the materials list and chart key give the colours for each. This kit has the yarn for the blue No. 31. The leaflet also has a long stocking hat, but it is given only in the oatmeal colours of No. 32, so it is not in this kit; it is in the No. 32 kit, sold separately.
Anything to watch for?
The chart key gives the colours for both versions side by side; read the No. 31 column. It prints “74” for the main blue, 9304; we read it as an older code for the same colour (Lopi 12 no. 25 also keys 9304 as “74”). On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border chart “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 4-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In size 134 each sleeve puts 10 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 9, and in size 152 the sleeve 11 and the body 10 — graft them together and ease in the extra stitch.
Which photo shows this version?
The field photo: the boy behind on the right, marked 12-31, wears No. 31, knitted in the original royal blue and scarlet. His bandana is not part of the pattern. The girl in front of him, marked 12-30, wears a red and purple sweater from a different Lopi 12 pattern, not in this kit. The older boy by the sea, marked 12-32, wears the oatmeal No. 32 and the stocking hat — sold as a separate kit.
Who designed it?
The pattern names no designer — it is from Ístex’s Lopi 12.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 60 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are our addition: the materials list leaves them out, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 38 or 40 stitches — far too few to go round a 40 cm circular.
