Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 30 — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
The scarlet (0078), bright fuchsia (9010) and goldenrod (9213) of this pattern are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the codes; these are Ístex’s names for them in its Lopi 18 leaflets. Happy red (0047) takes the place of scarlet. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves, the red in the yoke and the roll collar. It is a clear red, a little darker than the bright scarlet in the photo. Dark magenta (1240) takes the place of bright fuchsia. It is colour A, the filled dots: the rib at the hem, cuffs and neck, and the magenta bands, motifs and rays in the border and yoke. It is clearly pinker, brighter and less purple than the violet-purple in the photo, so the sweater will look red and pink rather than red and purple. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of goldenrod. It is colour C, the triangles: the small gold stitches in the border and yoke. It is a mustard gold, clearly more orange than the lemon yellow in the photo. Black (0059) is still made and is the black in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78 to 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 5 balls of happy red, 2 of dark magenta, 2 of black and 1 of golden heather — 10 balls. The 110 cm size uses 3 balls of red and 1 of black (7 balls in all), the 122 and 134 cm sizes 4 of red and 1 of black (8), and the 140 cm size the same as the 152 cm size.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints “910” for the filled dots — a misprint for 9010, colour A, which is dark magenta in this kit. On the sleeves of sizes 134, 140 and 152 the pattern itself says Chart 1 “does not work out”: 38 and 40 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion).
Which child in the photo wears this sweater?
The girl in front — red with purple rib at the hem and cuffs, a purple, black and gold yoke and a red roll collar, knitted in the original colours. The top under her collar, the handle she holds and her jeans are not part of the pattern. The boy behind her wears Lopi 12 no. 31, a different pattern, sold as its own kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves and the top of the yoke.
