Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 30 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only the black. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0059 (B — the black in the border and yoke) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it black. 0078 (M — the body, sleeves, the red in the yoke and the roll collar), 9010 (A — the rib at the hem, cuffs and neck, and the purple in the border and yoke) and 9213 (C — the small gold stitches in the border and yoke) are no longer made; Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call them scarlet, bright fuchsia and goldenrod — in this photo 9010 looks violet-purple. Our kit for this pattern uses 0047 happy red for 0078 — a clear red, a little darker than the bright scarlet in the photo — 1240 dark magenta for 9010, clearly pinker, brighter and less purple than the violet-purple in the photo, and 9964 golden heather for 9213, a mustard gold, clearly more orange than the lemon yellow in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88, 92 and 97 cm, a length of 42, 46, 50, 54 and 58 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 25, 29, 33, 35 and 38 cm to the underarm. The body’s 102 to 126 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: M (0078) 3 (4, 4, 5, 5), A (9010) 2 in every size, B (0059) 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) and C (9213) 1 in every size — 7 (8, 8, 10, 10) balls.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints “910” for the filled dots — a misprint for 9010, colour A — and the other codes short: 78, 59 and 213 for 0078, 0059 and 9213. On the sleeves of sizes 134, 140 and 152 the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out”: 38 and 40 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8 and ease in the extra one (our tip). The count after round 20 is printed with dots in place of colons, “104(112·116·124·132)sts” — the numbers are right. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Which child in the photo wears this sweater?
The girl in front, marked 12-30 on the leaflet’s cover, in the original colours. Her hair clip, the top showing under her collar, the handle she holds and her jeans are not part of the pattern. The boy behind her, marked 12-31, wears Lopi 12 no. 31, a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, with this sweater and Lopi 12 no. 31; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and all the instructions; a page with both charts and the key; and Ístex’s back cover.
