Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 2 — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — XS, S, M and L — with a chest of 101 to 120 cm, 67 to 73 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 41 to 45 cm. Go by the chest measurement: XS is 101 cm round.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size L plus the beret: 10 balls of black, 2 of white and 1 of grey heather. The pattern gives 7 (8 8 9) balls of black for the cardigan and 1 more for the beret.
Is the beret in the kit?
Yes — the beret is on page 3 of the same pattern: one size, knitted in black on 6 mm needles. Its ball of black is in the kit.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front; you sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Is the man’s sweater in the photo included?
No — it is Lopi 12 no. 22, a white pullover by the same designer, and a separate kit.
Anything to know before I start?
The pattern refers to an illustration on page 2 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists 6 mm double-pointed needles only for the beret, but each cardigan sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff and has only 42 to 48 stitches after the first round — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so they are needed there too. The beret is knitted on the 40 cm circular (the pattern says 50 cm). Buttons are not included.
