Lopi 12 No. 17 — your questions, answered

Why are five colours different from the pattern?
Scarlet (0078), cornflower (9303), apple green (9212), bright fuchsia (9010) and goldenrod (9213) are no longer made in Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the codes; these are Ístex’s names for them in its Lopi 18 leaflets. Happy red (0047) takes the place of scarlet. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the chart: the welt, body, sleeves, the red in the yoke, the front bands and the neckband — 8 of the 15 balls. It is a red of the same hue, but clearly darker than the bright scarlet in the photo. Space blue (1233) takes the place of cornflower. It is colour C: the blue tulip shapes above the black and white band, and the blue rounds near the neck. It is a vivid royal-blue heather, clearly darker than the cornflower blue in the photo. Apple green (9983) takes the place of the old apple green. It is colour D: the green rounds above the blue tulips and at the top of the yoke. It is a brighter, yellower green than in the photo. Dark magenta (1240) takes the place of bright fuchsia. It is colour E: the magenta ribs in the middle of the yoke. It is a vivid pink-magenta, brighter and pinker than the deep raspberry ribs in this photo; fuchsia heather (9969), a darker raspberry heather, is a closer match to this photo if you prefer it. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of goldenrod. It is colour F: the yellow rounds in the yoke. It is a mustard gold, clearly deeper than the bright yellow in the photo. Black (0059) and white (0051) are still made and are the black and white in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, XS to L, with a chest of 101 to 120 cm, 62 to 70 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 41 to 45 cm. The pattern gives one sleeve length. The chest is the finished cardigan, buttoned (it matches the stitch count plus one front band — our check), so choose by the chest measurement you want: XS is 101 cm round.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size L: 8 balls of happy red, 2 of black and 1 each of white, space blue, apple green, dark magenta and golden heather — 15 balls. XS uses 6 balls of happy red, S and M 7.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. Two purl stitches run side by side up the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints short codes: “78” is the red, “59 K” and “59 P” are black knitted and black purled, and “51” is white. For colours C and D — 9303 and 9212 in the materials list — it prints “82” and “378”; we read these as older codes for the same blue and green, and the order of the colours in the chart and the photo agree (our reading). “910” and “213” are E and F. The neckband count of 71 (71 73 75) stitches works out if you leave out the two purl stitches at the centre front (our calculation). The pattern asks for 6 (6 7 7) buttons but gives no size.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The black polo neck under it and the black trousers are not, and the gold buttons are not in the kit. The man beside her wears Lopi 12 no. 19, a different pattern — our Freyr kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons and stitch holders are not included.
