Woman by a ship’s rope ladder in the Lopi 12 no. 17 cardigan — long and scarlet red with gold buttons, and a textured yoke: black motifs rising into the red, a black and white band, blue tulip shapes, then green, fuchsia, yellow, blue and green rounds up to a red neckband, shown in the pattern’s original colours (all but the black and white are no longer made). Her black polo neck and trousers are not part of the pattern, nor is the man — he wears Lopi 12 no. 19, a different pattern, and jeans

Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 17 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only black (0059) and white (0051). The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0078 (M — the welt, body, sleeves, the red in the yoke, the front bands and the neckband), 9303 (C — the blue tulip shapes above the black and white band, and the blue rounds near the neck), 9212 (D — the green rounds above the tulips and at the top of the yoke), 9010 (E — the fuchsia ribs in the middle of the yoke) and 9213 (F — the yellow rounds) are no longer made; Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call them scarlet, cornflower, apple green, bright fuchsia and goldenrod. Our kit for this pattern uses 0047 happy red for scarlet — the same hue, clearly darker than the bright scarlet in the photo; 1233 space blue for cornflower, a vivid royal-blue heather, clearly darker; 9983 apple green for the old apple green, a brighter, yellower green; 1240 dark magenta for bright fuchsia, brighter and pinker than the deep raspberry ribs in this photo; and 9964 golden heather for goldenrod, a mustard gold, clearly deeper than the bright yellow in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, XS to L, with a chest of 101 to 120 cm, 62 to 70 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 41 to 45 cm; the body is 38 to 43 cm to the underarm. The chest is the finished cardigan’s measurement all the way round, buttoned — by our check it comes to about the body’s stitches plus one overlapping front band — so choose by the chest measurement you want: XS is 101 cm round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: M (0078) 6 (7, 7, 8), A (0059) 2 in every size, and 1 ball each of B (0051), C (9303), D (9212), E (9010) and F (9213) — 13 (14, 14, 15) balls.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. Two purl stitches run side by side up the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints short codes: “78” is the red, “59 K” and “59 P” are black knitted and black purled, and “51” is white. For colours C and D — 9303 and 9212 in the materials list — it prints “82” and “378”; we read these as older codes for the same blue and green, and the order of the colours in the chart and the photo agree (our reading). “910” and “213” are E and F. The neckband count of 71 (71, 73, 75) stitches works out if you leave out the two purl stitches at the centre front (our calculation). The sleeves change to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so you will need 6 mm double-pointed needles, which the list leaves out (our reading). The pattern asks for 6 (6, 7, 7) buttons but gives no size, and calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is, in its original colours. Her black polo neck and black trousers are not, and the pattern names no kind of button. The man beside her wears Lopi 12 no. 19, a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, with this cardigan and Lopi 12 no. 19; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and all the instructions; a page with the yoke chart and its key; and Ístex’s back cover.
