Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 15 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
The pattern’s blue (9390) is no longer made by Ístex. The pattern prints only its code; in the photo it is a clear periwinkle blue. This kit has blue tweed (1234) in its place — a blue of the same hue, but darker, and a tweed with small white flecks that the original does not have. Knit it wherever the charts show colour A, the filled dots (marked 390 in the key): the blue diamonds and long blue shapes in the yoke and the blue in the borders above the hem and cuffs. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 105 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The buttonholes go on the right front for women and on the left front for men.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 9 balls of midnight blue, 2 of blue tweed and 1 of white — 12 balls. XS and S use 7 balls of midnight blue, M and L use 8. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
Three small things. In the welt, the line after the buttonhole row says to cast on 1 stitch in place of the one cast off — that is only for the man’s buttonhole; the woman’s (yarn forward, K2tog) keeps the stitch count, so skip that line. The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 2 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. And the neckband count of 71 (71 73 75 77) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation).
Is the black polo neck in the photo part of the pattern?
No — it is worn under the cardigan. The cardigan has a folded ribbed neckband with a button at the centre.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff and has only 42 to 48 stitches after the first round — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons are not included.
