Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 15 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0709 (M — the body, rib, bands and the yoke background) and 0051 (B — the white zigzags) are still made by Ístex; our shop calls them midnight blue and white. 9390 (A — the blue diamonds and long blue shapes) is no longer made, and no name for it is printed; in the photo it is a periwinkle blue. Our kit for this pattern uses 1234 blue tweed in its place — a blue of the same hue but darker, with small white flecks.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 105, 109, 114, 118 and 123 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body is knitted 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. Between the purl stitches at the centre front it has 131 (137, 143, 149, 155) stitches, about 101 to 119 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation); the front bands make up most of the difference to the printed chest.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: 0709 (M) 7 (7, 8, 8, 9), 9390 (A) 2 and 0051 (B) 1 in every size — 10 (10, 11, 11, 12) balls. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. Two stitches are cast on at the centre front and purled all the way up the body and yoke; you sew two rows of machine stitching in the centre of each column of purl stitches and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. Each front band has a stocking-stitch facing that folds over the cut edge and is slip-stitched down. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead: knit the first and last stitch of every row for an even edge, and read the charts right to left on right-side rows and left to right on wrong-side rows.
Where do the buttons go?
6 (6, 7, 7, 7) buttons: one at the buttonhole in the welt, 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) up the band, and one at the centre of the folded neckband, 2 cm above the top of the band. The buttonholes are on the right front for women and the left front for men. The pattern gives no button size; in the photo they are dark.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small things. In the welt, the line after the buttonhole row says to cast on 1 stitch in place of the one cast off — that is only for the man’s buttonhole; the woman’s (yarn forward, K2tog) keeps the stitch count, so skip that line. The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 2 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. The neckband count of 71 (71, 73, 75, 77) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 to 48 stitches after the first round — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The chart key prints the codes short: 709 is 0709, 390 is 9390 and 51 is 0051. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. Her black polo neck, white trousers, glasses and earrings are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, tension and the instructions up to the start of the neckband, a page with the end of the neckband, the colour key and both charts, and Ístex’s back cover.
