Lopi 12 No. 10 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
The hat’s colour in the pattern (9239), a very dark tweed with light flecks — the pattern prints no name for it — is no longer made. This kit has black tweed (9975) in its place, for the hat only. Black tweed has the same dark ground and light flecks, but the hat will look a little blacker and less olive than in the photo. The cardigan’s three colours are exactly as in the pattern. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 105 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The printed chest is 105 cm even in XS, so the fit is roomy. By the stitch counts the knitted body is about 99 to 118 cm round before the front bands are added (our calculation); the bands make up most of the 5 cm difference to the printed chest.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL plus the hat: 8 balls of chocolate heather, 3 of white, 2 of black heather and 1 of black tweed for the hat — 14 balls. For the cardigan, XS and S use 10 balls and M and L use 11. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the hat in the kit?
Yes — the hat is on page 3 of the same pattern: plain stocking stitch in the round on 6 mm double-pointed needles, with no rib, so the lower edge rolls up as in the photo. It has two sizes, 63 and 66 stitches — about 48.5 and 51 cm round (our calculation); the pattern gives no head sizes. One ball makes either.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front; you sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The cut edges are then finished with one row of crochet, using a single strand of the brown (the lopi split in two) and a 4.5 mm hook. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with garter edge stitches and no cutting.
Which buttons do I need?
Either 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) rounded buttons, or 14 (14, 14, 16, 16) flat buttons with two holes and 2 (2, 2, 2¼, 2¼) m of narrow leather strip — the flat buttons are tied on in pairs, one on each side of the band. Buttons and leather are not included.
Anything to watch for?
In sizes S and L the sleeves put 11 stitches on the holder at the underarm and the body 10 — graft them together and absorb the extra stitch. The neckband is worked in rows on the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles; the 80 cm circular works just as well. The plaid shirt in the photo is not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists the 6 mm double-pointed needles only for the hat, but each cardigan sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff and has only 42 to 48 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so they are used there too. The crochet hook and buttons are not included.
