Guðrún Jónsdóttir’s round-yoke cardigan from Ístex’s Lopi 12, knitted in Álafosslopi in the round and cut open at the front, for women and men — one colour version, in five sizes from XS to XL, with a sleeve length for each. In the photo it is chocolate brown, with a deep white yoke of brown and black heather motifs ending in points, the same small border above the ribbed hem and cuffs, and buttons on ribbed front bands; the pattern gives two ways to button it, with rounded buttons or with pairs of flat buttons tied on with leather strip. The same pattern has a plain hat with a rolled edge. The leaflet prints only the colour numbers; the cardigan’s three colours are still made, but the hat’s 9239 is not.

Gauge
13 sts × 18 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 6 mm needles. The hat gives the same gauge.
Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 80 cm, for the hem rib and the front bands
6 mm (US 10) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body and the yoke
4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the cuffs and the neckband
Hat: 6 mm (US 10) double-pointed needles
By our reading the cardigan sleeves need the 6 mm double-pointed needles too: they change to 6 mm with only 42 to 48 stitches after the first round, too few for a 40 cm circular. The pattern lists them only for the hat
The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”
You will also need
A 4.5 mm crochet hook, stitch holders, and either 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) rounded buttons or 14 (14, 14, 16, 16) flat buttons with two holes and 2 (2, 2, 2¼, 2¼) m of narrow leather strip — all in the pattern’s list; a sewing machine and thread for the stitching before the front is cut; and a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms and sewing down the neckband.
How it is knitted
The hem is knitted back and forth on the 4.5 mm circular in K1, P1 rib, with the first and last stitch knitted on every row, for 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm. On 6 mm the body is joined into a round and increased to 131 (137, 143, 149, 155) stitches, and the first and last stitch of every round are purled all the way up — they mark the centre front, where it will be cut. A 10-round border from chart 1 in all three colours comes next, then the body goes on in the brown (M) to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm. The sleeves are knitted in the round from 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm of K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, get the same border, and are increased every 7th round for women or every 8th for men. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — a 43-round chart in all three colours with five decrease rounds, from 199 (207, 215, 231, 239) stitches to 77 (80, 83, 89, 92); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The neckband is decreased to 55 (55, 57, 59, 61) stitches and knitted back and forth in K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for 8 cm. Two rows of machine stitching go up the centre of each column of purl stitches, and the front is cut open between them; the cut edges are finished with one row of double crochet (US single crochet), using one strand of the brown split from the lopi and a 4.5 mm hook. The neckband is folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched, and the underarms are grafted. The front bands are picked up along the opening — 1 stitch every row, through both layers of the neckband — and knitted in rib on the 4.5 mm circular, with buttonholes on one side. The hat is stocking stitch in the round on 6 mm double-pointed needles with no rib — the lower edge rolls up, as in the photo — and the top is decreased in three steps and drawn together.
