Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 1 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
The pattern’s rust (9392) and steel blue (9300) are no longer made by Ístex. The leaflet prints only the codes; rust and steel blue are the names Ístex gives these colours in its Lopi 18 leaflets. This kit has amber heather (9971) in place of the rust. It is colour M, the empty squares in the chart: the body, sleeves, rib, collar, the background of the yoke and the whole beret. Amber heather is a copper-rust heather with small flecks — noticeably more orange than the brick red in the photo. If you would like a redder sweater, happy red (0047) is the next closest: a darker, cooler and cleaner red. Denim heather (0010) takes the place of the steel blue. It is colour B, the half-filled squares: the blue checks in the yoke, and one of the two strands in the blanket-stitch edging. It is a heathered slate blue, close to the blue in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98 to 123 cm and a length of 56 to 63 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 36 to 40 cm for women and 41 to 45 cm for men. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the width you want the sweater to be: XS is 98 cm round.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL plus the beret: 10 balls of amber heather (8 for the sweater, 2 for the beret), 2 of black and 1 of denim heather — 13 balls. For the sweater, XS and S use 6 balls of the main colour and M and L use 7. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths, and the beret’s black and blue edging comes from the sweater’s balls.
Is the beret in the kit?
Yes — it is on page 3 of the same pattern, where it is called simply “Hat”. It is one size, knitted in the main colour on 6 mm needles: it starts from 60 stitches — about 46 cm round before stretching (our calculation; the pattern gives no head size) — and widens to 96 stitches, with a purl round at the edge of the top and a crown decreased at six points. Blanket stitch in black and blue goes over the purl round. Its 2 balls are in the kit.
How is the blanket-stitch edging done?
When the sweater is finished, you sew blanket stitch round the edge of the welt, the cuffs and the collar with one strand of black and one strand of blue held together, putting the needle in between the knit and purl stitches of the rib. It uses the black and blue already in the kit.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
Two small things. The chart key prints the blue as “98”, but the materials list says 9300; we read the key as a misprint (0098 was a different, lighter blue) — knit the half-filled squares in the blue, denim heather in this kit. The key also prints the other codes short: “392” for 9392 and “59” for 0059. On the beret, the 6th decrease round reads “*K2tog, K2tog*, 24 sts”. To reach 24 stitches from 36, decrease twice in each 6-stitch section, for example *K1, K2tog, K2tog, K1*, then K2tog until 6 stitches remain (our reading).
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater and the beret are. The jeans, the black gloves and the earrings are not.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists 6 mm double-pointed needles only for the beret, but each sweater sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff and has only 42 to 48 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so they are needed there too. The beret is knitted on the 40 cm circular (the pattern says 50 cm). Stitch holders and the tapestry needle are not included.
