Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 1 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only the black. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0059 (A — the fir trees, checks and lines, and one of the two edging strands) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it black. 9392 (M — the body, sleeves, rib, collar, the yoke background and the whole beret) and 9300 (B — the blue checks and the other edging strand) are no longer made; Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call them rust and steel blue. Our kit for this pattern uses 9971 amber heather for 9392 — a copper-rust heather, noticeably more orange than the brick red in the photo — and 0010 denim heather for 9300, a heathered slate blue, close to the blue in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm and a length of 56, 57, 59, 61 and 63 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 36, 38, 38, 40 and 40 cm for women and 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for men. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round (it matches the stitch count — our check), so choose by the size you want the sweater to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The sweater: M (9392) 6 (6, 7, 7, 8), A (0059) 2 and B (9300) 1 in every size — 9 (9, 10, 10, 11) balls. The beret takes 2 more balls of M. Its list also names the black (A) and the blue (B) with no amount — they are only for its blanket stitch, so if you knit the sweater too, what is left of those balls will do (our reading); for the beret alone you need a little of each. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the beret part of the pattern?
Yes — it is on page 3, where it is called simply “Hat”. It is one size, knitted in M on 6 mm: cast on 60 stitches — about 46 cm round (our calculation; the pattern gives no head size) — work one round of K1, P1, then stocking stitch to 16 cm; three increase rounds take it to 96 stitches, and it goes on straight to 26 cm. A purl round and a knit round follow, then the crown is decreased in six sections and drawn together. Blanket stitch in black and blue goes over the purl round.
How is the blanket-stitch edging done?
When the sweater is finished, you work blanket stitch round the edge of the welt, the cuffs and the collar with one strand of A (black) and one of B (blue) held together, putting the needle in between the knit and purl stitches of the rib.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small things. The chart key prints the half-filled square as “98”, but the materials list says B 9300; we read the key as a misprint (Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets give 0098 as cadet blue, a different colour) — knit the half-filled squares in B. The key also prints the other codes short: “392” for 9392 and “59” for 0059. On the beret, the 6th decrease round reads “*K2tog, K2tog*, 24 sts”; to get 24 stitches from 36, decrease twice in each 6-stitch section, for example *K1, K2tog, K2tog, K1* (our reading). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles for the sweater, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so use the beret’s 6 mm double-pointed needles there too (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater and the beret are. The jeans, the black gloves, the earrings and the laced boot are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the body, the start of the sleeves and the yoke chart with its key; a page with the rest of the sweater and the beret, with its own photo; and Ístex’s back cover.
