Description

Védís Jónsdóttir’s Lappi from Ístex’s Lopi 25: a children’s round-yoke zip cardigan in pine green Léttlopi, with a yoke in spring green, chocolate brown, white and three blues, a folded edge at the hem and cuffs, and a zip down the front. The pattern’s hazel heather (1401) is no longer made; this kit has 0867 chocolate heather in its place.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up in pine green, with a purl stitch at each side of the centre front for the steek. Hem and cuffs start with a folded stocking-stitch edge. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — a 36-round chart, never more than two colours in a round, with five decrease rounds that leave the front stitches undecreased. A short patterned band and a folded edge finish the neck. The front is machine-sewn, cut open, and the zip sewn in by hand.

Why is one colour different from the pattern?

Hazel heather (1401) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has chocolate heather (0867) in its place — a dark brown heather, a little darker and less red than the hazel. Knit it wherever the chart shows the hazel. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.

Which size should I knit?

Six sizes — 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, 4, 6 and 8 — with a chest of 59 to 81 cm and 20 to 30 cm from hem to underarm. The pattern prints the sizes without a unit; they are most likely ages in years (our reading), so choose by the chest measurement.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for the largest sizes: 5 balls of pine green and one each of spring green, chocolate heather, white, lapis blue, heaven blue and glacier blue — 11 balls. Size 1–2 uses 9.

Which zip do I need?

An open-ended (separating) zip: 30 cm for size 1–2, 35 cm for 2–3, 40 cm for 3–4 and 4, and 45 cm for 6 and 8. The zip is not included.

Do I have to cut my knitting?

Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of small straight stitches into each by machine, cut between them, and sew the zip in by hand under the folded front edge.

The boy in the green cardigan. The girl wears the red version, also sold as a kit.

What does the kit with needles include?
