Good to know

Lappi — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For the red version, yes: crimson red (9434), spring green (1406), black (0059), white (0051), lapis blue (1403), heaven blue (1402) and glacier blue (1404) are all still made by Ístex. For the green version, all but one: hazel (1401), the brown of the animals and the small motifs, is no longer made. Our green kit uses 0867 chocolate heather in its place — a dark brown heather, a little darker and less red than the hazel. Our shop adds “heather” to several of the names, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Six sizes — 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, 4, 6 and 8 — with a chest of 59, 64, 68, 72, 77 and 81 cm, 20 to 30 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 22 to 32 cm. The pattern prints the sizes without a unit; they are most likely ages in years (our reading), so choose by the chest measurement.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same for both versions: the main colour A 3 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) and one ball each of the six other colours — 9 balls for size 1–2, 10 for 2–3 and 3–4, 11 for 4, 6 and 8.
How do I knit the red version from the chart?
The charts are drawn in the green version’s colours. The key gives two codes where the versions differ: A 1407 / 9434 and C 1401 / 0059. So for red, knit the dark green squares in crimson red and the brown squares in black; spring green, white and the three blues are the same in both.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of small straight stitches into each one by machine and cut between them. The zip is sewn in by hand under the front edge twice: first from the right side where the edge folds, then the edge of the zip tape is slip-stitched from the wrong side.
Which zip do I need?
The pattern gives the length by size: 30 cm for 1–2, 35 cm for 2–3, 40 cm for 3–4 and 4, and 45 cm for 6 and 8. It does not say which kind; for a cardigan that opens all the way you need an open-ended (separating) zip. In the photos the red cardigan has a black zip and the green one a green zip.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Small things. The hem facing on the body and the end of the neckband are knitted back and forth, although the pattern calls those rows “rnds”. The yoke says to change to shorter needles, but none are listed. And the materials list calls both versions a “sweater”; both are zip cardigans.
Which child in the photos wears which version?
The girl on the slide, on the cover, wears the red version; the boy wears the green one. Her white top and their jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, tension, body, sleeves, the yoke chart with its colour key and a photo of the green version, a page with the neckband chart, the yoke, neckband and finishing, and Ístex’s back cover.
