Good to know

Knúpur — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Light red (1408) is no longer made. This kit has crimson red (9434) in its place — colour B: the folded picot edges at the hem, cuffs and neck, the first two rounds of the flower borders, the flowers and zigzags in the yoke, and the crochet borders and button loops down the fronts. In the photos the light red is a bright, clear red, clearly lighter than the garnet body. Crimson red is a deeper, darker red, so the edges and flowers will stand out less from the garnet body than in the photos — but they are still a brighter, clearer red than the garnet. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — 1, 1½, 2, 3 and 4 years — with a chest of 54, 58, 61, 64 and 68 cm, 18 to 26 cm from the picot edge to the underarm, and sleeves of 20 to 28 cm. It is a little wider at the hem: 61 to 74 cm, narrowed in two steps on the way up.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 4 years: 4 balls of garnet red and one each of crimson red, spring green heather and white — 7 balls. Sizes 1 and 1½ use 3 balls of garnet red (6 in all). The pattern calls spring green heather simply spring green.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each of them by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. Both fronts are then finished with 2 rows of single crochet in crimson red over the machine stitching.
How are the picot edges made?
The hem, cuffs and neckband each have a few rows of stocking stitch in crimson red, a row of k2tog, yo, and a few more rows. At the end each edge is folded to the inside along the row of holes and slip-stitched down, and the holes make a row of little points.
How does it fasten?
With 5 button loops of 3 chains in the second crochet row of the right front — the first at the neckline, the last just above the picot hem, the others evenly between — and 5 little buttons on the left front. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons and the 3.5 mm crochet hook are not included. For a snugger neckline, the pattern suggests running elastic thread through the inside of the neckband.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small slips. On the sleeves, “using 3½ dpns” means 3.5 mm double-pointed needles, and “change to 4½ mm needles” means 4.5 mm double-pointed needles. In the second body decrease round a bracket is missing: read “Work 12 (12, 13, 14, 15) sts around”. The first decrease round of the yoke chart takes one stitch fewer than the others — follow the chart; the printed stitch counts are right (our arithmetic). In the body and yoke charts, the purl stitch at each end of every row is the steek stitch.
Is there a doll sweater to match?
The pattern’s companion doll sweater, Rós (for a 46 cm, 18-inch doll), is sold as a separate kit. Its red version has a crimson red body rather than garnet, and pink heather (1412) in place of the light red, so it does not match this cardigan exactly; the purple Rós matches the purple Knúpur.
Which photos show this colour?
The first three — the toddler on the swing, alone and in front of the girl in purple, and the toddler on the left on the rock — all in the original light red. The last photo shows the purple version, sold as a separate kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 3.5 mm crochet hook and the buttons are not included.
