Good to know

Knúpur — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Purple version: violet (1414), spring green (1406) and white (0051) are still made by Ístex; lilac (1413) is not. Red version: garnet red (1409), spring green and white are still made; light red (1408) is not. In both versions the missing colour is B: the folded picot edges at the hem, cuffs and neck, the first two rounds of the flower borders, the flowers and zigzags in the yoke, and the crochet borders and button loops down the fronts. Our purple kit uses 1702 milkyway for lilac — a pale, cool lavender-blue, clearly bluer and a little lighter, so the flowers and edges look light blue-lavender next to the violet rather than lilac. Our red kit uses 9434 crimson red for light red — a deeper, darker red, so the edges and flowers stand out less from the garnet body than in the photos, though they are still a brighter, clearer red than the garnet. Our shop calls 1414 and 1406 violet heather and spring green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — 1, 1½, 2, 3 and 4 years — with a chest of 54, 58, 61, 64 and 68 cm, 18 to 26 cm from the picot edge to the underarm, and sleeves of 20 to 28 cm. It is a little wider at the hem — 61 to 74 cm all the way round — and narrowed in two steps on the way up.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same amounts for both versions: the main colour (A) 3 (3, 4, 4, 4) balls — violet for the purple version, garnet red for the red — and one ball each of B, C and D: 6 balls for 1 and 1½ years, 7 for 2, 3 and 4 years.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and the end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine, with small straight stitches, and cut carefully between the sewn rows. Both fronts are then edged with 2 rows of single crochet in colour B over the machine stitching. You need a sewing machine; it is not in the pattern’s list.
How are the picot edges made?
The hem, cuffs and neckband each have a few rows of stocking stitch in colour B, a row of k2tog, yo, and a few more rows. At the end each edge is folded to the inside along the row of holes and slip-stitched down, and the holes make a row of little points.
How does it fasten?
With 5 button loops of 3 chains in the second crochet row of the right front — the first at the neckline, the last just above the picot hem, the others evenly between — and 5 little buttons. The pattern gives no button size. For a snugger neckline, it suggests running elastic thread through the wrong side.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small slips. On the sleeves, “using 3½ dpns” means 3.5 mm double-pointed needles, and “change to 4½ mm needles” means 4.5 mm double-pointed needles. In the second body decrease round a bracket is missing: read “Work 12 (12, 13, 14, 15) sts around”. The first decrease round of the yoke chart, round 12, takes one stitch fewer than the other three — follow the chart; the printed stitch counts are right (our check). In the body and yoke charts, the purl stitch at each end of every round is the steek stitch.
Is the doll’s sweater in the photo part of this pattern?
No — the doll wears Rós, Lopi 29 no. 5, a round-yoke sweater for a 46 cm (18-inch) doll from the same book, which is a separate pattern. Its purple version uses the same four colours as the purple Knúpur; its red version has a crimson body rather than garnet.
Which photo shows which version?
The cover photo shows the purple version on a girl holding a doll. In the photo of two girls on a rock, the toddler on the left wears the red version and the girl on the right the purple; on the swings, the toddler in front wears red and the girl behind her purple; and the toddler alone on a swing wears red. All are in the pattern’s original colours. The dresses, tights and shoes are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials for both versions, the sizes, the body and sleeve instructions, the start of the yoke, the body and sleeve charts and the colour key; a page with the yoke chart, the neckband, the finishing and the front borders; and Ístex’s back cover.
