Good to know

Kim — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Light red (1408) and sun yellow (1411) are no longer made. This kit has crimson red (9434) in place of light red — colour B, the ring round the motif on the back — and mimosa (1703) in place of sun yellow — colour F, two of the star’s petals. The garnet body, the black centre and the other petals are in the pattern’s own colours. In the photo of the back the ring looks pale pink, although the pattern lists light red (1408) for it — the same yarn shows as clear red petals in the blue version’s photo. Crimson red is a strong, clear red, so your ring will be red, not pink, and it will stand out much less from the garnet body than in the photo. Mimosa is a warm golden yellow, close to the yellow petals. If you would like a pale ring like the photo, pink heather (1412), the colour of two of the petals, is closer in look (our suggestion). You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — S, M, L and XL. The pattern’s chest measurement, 90, 99, 108 and 117 cm, is twice the width of the back; the two fronts overlap over the chest, so the cardigan is roomy (our reading). It is 71 to 79 cm long — in the photos it reaches the upper thigh — and the sleeves are 38 to 41 cm long. Each sleeve is the same width from cuff to shoulder, about 44 to 51 cm round (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for XL: 12 balls of garnet red and one ball each of crimson red, black, spring green heather, pink heather, mimosa and glacier blue — 18 balls. S and M use 10 balls of garnet red (16 in all), L uses 11 (17). The six motif colours are used only in the back motif, so most of each of those balls will be left over (our estimate).
How does it close?
It doesn’t — the pattern has no buttons, ties or belt. The fronts are wide enough to overlap: each is 28 to 35 cm wide at the hem, and together they are about 12 cm wider than the back (our calculation). In the photos it is worn crossed over and held with a wide leather belt; the belt is not part of the pattern and not included.
How is the motif knitted?
In intarsia, on the back only: each colour area has its own length of yarn (or a small bobbin), and the yarns are twisted round each other where the colours meet, so no strands are carried across the back. The chart is 41 stitches wide and 55 rows high, centred on the back. The pattern says “see information page 2” for intarsia, but that page is not part of this leaflet, so it has no intarsia instructions. If you haven’t knitted intarsia before, try it on a small swatch first (our suggestion).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The back and fronts are knitted back and forth, but their moss-stitch edge says “7 rnds” — read 7 rows. The front decreases are worded unusually (“purl together last P st from border and first K st” on the right front); by our reading they take a stitch from the plain part of the front and keep the 10-stitch border as it is. And the back is cast off while the front shoulder stitches stay on holders, so “graft shoulder together” means joining the live front stitches to the cast-off back edge (our reading).
Which photos show this version?
The two photos of the garnet cardigan — from the front, worn with a wide belt, and from the back with the motif. The dark blue cardigan is the pattern’s blue version, also sold as a kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm — ADDI, as named in the pattern. Stitch holders and intarsia bobbins are not included.
