Good to know

Kim — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Both main colours are still made by Ístex: lapis blue (1403) and garnet red (1409). In the blue version heaven blue (1402), navy blue (9420) and spring green (1406) are still made; three of the petal colours — light red (1408), lilac (1413) and sun yellow (1411) — are not. In the red version black (0059), spring green (1406), pink (1412) and glacier blue (1404) are still made; light red (1408), the ring, and sun yellow (1411) are not. Our blue kit uses 9434 crimson red for light red (the same hue as the red petals in the photo, but deeper), 1702 milkyway for lilac (clearly paler and bluer, an icy blue-lavender, so those petals look pale blue-lavender rather than lilac) and 1703 mimosa for sun yellow (a warm golden yellow, close to the yellow petals). Our red kit uses 9434 crimson red for the ring and 1703 mimosa for sun yellow. In the photo of the red back the ring looks pale pink, although the pattern lists light red (1408) for it — the same yarn shows as clear red petals in the blue version’s photo; a crimson red ring is a strong red and stands out much less from the garnet body. Our shop calls 1403, 1402, 1406 and 1412 lapis blue heather, heaven blue heather, spring green heather and pink heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — S, M, L and XL. The pattern’s chest measurement, 90, 99, 108 and 117 cm, is twice the width of the back: the back is 45, 49, 54 and 58 cm wide (our calculation). The fronts slope: each is 28 to 35 cm wide at the hem but only about 22 to 28 cm at the underarm, so at the chest the two fronts together are about as wide as the back and their edges just meet; they overlap more towards the hem (our calculation). It is 71, 74, 77 and 79 cm long — in the photos it reaches the upper thigh — and the sleeves are 38, 39, 40 and 41 cm long. Each sleeve is the same width from cuff to shoulder, about 44 to 51 cm round (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same amounts for both versions: the main colour (A) 10 (10, 11, 12) balls — lapis blue for the blue version, garnet red for the red — and one ball each of the six motif colours, B to G: 16 balls in S and M, 17 in L and 18 in XL. The six motif colours are used only in the back motif, so most of each of those balls will be left over (our estimate).
How does it close?
It doesn’t — the pattern has no buttons, ties or belt. The fronts are wide enough to overlap at the hem, where together they are about 12 cm wider than the back; at the underarm the two together are about as wide as the back (our calculation). In the front photo it is worn crossed over, and in two of the photos it is held with a wide leather belt, which is not part of the pattern.
How is the motif knitted?
In intarsia, on the back only: each colour area has its own length of yarn (or a small bobbin), and the yarns are twisted round each other where the colours meet, so no strands are carried across the back. The chart is 41 stitches wide and 55 rows high, centred on the back. The pattern says “see information page 2” for intarsia, but that page is not part of this leaflet, so the PDF has no intarsia instructions. If you haven’t knitted intarsia before, try it on a small swatch first (our suggestion).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The back and fronts are knitted back and forth, but their moss-stitch edge says “7 rnds” — read 7 rows. The front decreases are worded unusually (“Purl together last P st from border and first K st” on the right front); by our reading they take a stitch from the plain part of the front and keep the 10-stitch border as it is. And the back is cast off while the front shoulder stitches stay on holders, so “graft shoulder together” means joining the live front stitches to the cast-off back edge (our reading).
Which photo shows which version?
The cover photo, in a wood, shows the red version from the front, worn with a wide leather belt over a black top. Page 3 has two photos from the back: the blue version, belted, and the red version. The belt, the tops, the skirt and the trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials for both versions, the sizes, the start of the instructions and the motif chart with its key, a page with the rest of the instructions, the finishing and the two photos from the back, and Ístex’s back cover.
