Yule Lad no. 2 of 13

Icelandic Yule Lad - Gully Gawk

Giljagaur, the Gully Gawk · hand-painted figure with his wooden pail, designed by Brian Pilkington · about 12.5 cm (4.9 in)

Sale price$37.90

The one for the person who takes the cream off the top. Giljagaur's whole ambition is the froth on a pail of fresh milk, and this figure shows him with the pail already in his arms, eyes shut and laughing. A good-humoured present for anyone with a weakness for dairy.

Giljagaur in detail

  • A wooden pail with two dark hoops, held tight against his chest in both arms
  • Dressed in old farm clothes rather than a red suit: shaggy brown waistcoat, striped sleeves, grey knee breeches, dark red cap
  • Painted floorboards under his feet and his name in gold letters on the red base
  • About 12.5 cm tall by the maker's measure, in a clear window box with a booklet in English

Why you'll love it

  • A thief with one item on his listHis brothers go after sausages, skyr and candles. Giljagaur wants only the froth from the milk pail, and he waits in the cowshed until he can get it.
  • A yearly present for a motherOne reviewer buys one or two of these lads each Christmas for a mother who, the review says, really enjoys them.
  • Dressed for the cowshedTan socks and plain black shoes finish the outfit. The Yule Lads who visit the National Museum of Iceland each December wear the old clothes too, not red suits.
  • The designer came for a holidayBrian Pilkington, born in Liverpool, came to Iceland for a summer holiday in 1977. As his Icelandic publisher puts it, he is still here.
  • Held still for the journeyA moulded clear tray keeps him in place inside his printed window box, with the booklet about the sixteen characters tucked in.
  • Duties are dealt with at checkoutFor orders to the US and Canada, duties and taxes are paid when you order. The courier asks for nothing more.

Questions people ask before they buy

Who is Giljagaur?
The second of the thirteen Yule Lads. He comes on 13 December, and the National Museum of Iceland sums up his habit like this: before milking machines came along, he would slip into the cowshed and steal the froth off the top of the milk buckets.
What does Giljagaur mean?
Gil is a gully, the deep cut a stream digs into the land, and gaur is a lad or fellow. Gully Gawk is the usual English name. The 1932 poem that fixed the thirteen names has him creeping down from his gully and hiding in the cowshed stalls until nobody is looking.
How tall is he?
About 12.5 cm (4.9 in) according to the maker. That makes him taller than Stúfur, who comes the day after him.
I already have some of the brothers. Will he match?
Yes. All sixteen figures in the series are designed by Brian Pilkington, stand on the same kind of red base with the name on the front and come in the same style of window box. A customer who buys two each December wrote that they all match.
Can he stand within reach of small children?
Better not. He is a painted display figure, not a toy. The story of the milk thief is the part to share with them.
Does he ship free?
Not on his own. Free shipping starts at $149 for the US, Canada and Europe. Below that, the shipping cost is shown at checkout before you pay.
