Hvarf is a Léttlopi sweater or dress with a wide cape collar, from Ístex’s Lopi 29, designed by Védís Jónsdóttir. Body and sleeves are knitted in the round; the body is shaped with decreases and then increases at the sides. The yoke itself is plain; the colourwork is on a cape collar knitted up from the neck and widened in five increase rounds, with a matching band above the cuffs. The pattern has two colour versions in sizes XS to XL: a crimson sweater with black sleeves and a black-edged cape in eight bright colours, and a chocolate dress with black cuffs and a cape in browns, olive greens, beige and white. Two colours of the red sweater — 1410 orange and 9264 mustard — are no longer made.

How it is knitted
Sweater: 148 (156, 164, 172, 180) stitches are cast on loosely in crimson on 3.5 mm and knitted in twisted rib (knit 1 through the back loop, purl 1) for 3 cm, then in stocking stitch on 4.5 mm. Dress: 156 (164, 172, 180, 188) stitches in chocolate, twisted rib on 4.5 mm. Both are decreased at the sides — the sweater three times, the dress five — and increased again three times, to 148 (156, 164, 172, 180) stitches. The sleeves start with 3 cm of twisted rib on 3.5 mm double-pointed needles — crimson for the sweater, black for the dress — then a 34-round colourwork band on 5 mm, then plain on 4.5 mm in black (sweater) or chocolate (dress). Body and sleeves are joined and the round yoke is knitted plain in the main colour, decreased in five rounds from 224 (232, 240, 248, 256) stitches to 84 (87, 90, 93, 96), with short rows at the back. The cape collar starts with 4 cm of twisted rib in black on 3.5 mm; then the work is turned and knitted from the wrong side on 4.5 mm, increased in five rounds to 200 (208, 216, 224, 232) stitches, and the 38-round chart is knitted. It ends with a knit, a purl and a knit round and is bound off purlwise. The underarms are grafted.
