Good to know

Hún — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Hazel (1401) and camel (1400) are no longer made. This kit has chocolate heather (0867) in place of hazel — colour B, the brown stripes between the bands and the brown parts of the yoke — and barley (1419) in place of camel — colour D, the tan stitches in the stars, diamonds and crosses, next to the light ash. Chocolate heather is a dark brown heather; in the photo the hazel stripes look lighter and redder, so expect a darker cardigan with a little less contrast next to the black. Barley is a warm tan, a little darker and less golden than the camel in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — XS to XL — with a chest of 82, 85, 93, 99 and 104 cm, 30 to 33 cm from hem to underarm, and short sleeves of 11 to 12 cm to the underarm. It is a little wider at the hem: 90 to 112 cm. The pattern prints 85 cm for size S, but by the stitch count it comes out at about 88 cm (our calculation). The pattern also notes that the neck is slightly wide.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for XL: 5 balls of black, 3 of chocolate heather and 2 each of rust heather, barley and light ash heather — 14 balls. XS and S use 10 balls, M 12 and L 13. The pattern calls light ash heather (0054) simply “ash”.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with two purl stitches at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each of them by machine with small straight stitches, and cut carefully between the sewn rows. The front edges are then finished with the black crochet borders, worked over the machine stitching.
How does it fasten?
With 5 chain loops crocheted into the second row of the right front border — the first at the top of the yoke, the last just above the moss-stitch hem, the others evenly between — and 5 small buttons on the left front. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons and the 3.5 mm crochet hook are not included.
Is there a mistake in the pattern?
Yes, one stitch count. Where body and sleeves are joined for the yoke, the left front is printed as 33 (35) 37 (38) 40 stitches; in XS, L and XL that does not match the body’s stitches. Knit the left front the same as the right front — 32 (35) 37 (39) 41 stitches (our reading) — and the total comes out at the printed 227 (235) 251 (259) 267. Also, the neckband is moss stitch but says “bind off in rib”: bind off in pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle in 80 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 40 cm; 4 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the longer circulars as 60–80 cm; the kit has 80 cm. We also add 4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the sleeves: the pattern lists none, but the 60–65 sleeve stitches (about 33–36 cm round, our calculation) are too few for a 40 cm circular. The crochet hook and buttons are not included.
