Hún — Icelandic for “she”. Védís Jónsdóttir’s cardigan from Ístex’s Lopi 28 is short-sleeved and hip-length, in Léttlopi: bands of stars, diamonds and small crosses in camel and ash on black, hazel brown stripes between them, rows of rust eyelets, a round yoke, black moss-stitch edges and five crochet button loops. It is knitted in the round and cut open at the front. One colour version, in five sizes from XS to XL. Two of its five colours are no longer made — hazel (1401) and camel (1400); the black, rust and ash still are.

Gauge
18 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 4.5 mm needles.
Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles, 40 and 60–80 cm, for the body and the yoke
4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 60–80 cm, for the moss-stitch hem
3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 40 cm, for the neckband
4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles for the cuffs
By our reading also 4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the sleeves: they change to 4.5 mm with 60 to 65 stitches, about 33 to 36 cm round, too few for a 40 cm circular. The pattern’s list leaves them out
You will also need
A 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook for the front borders and button loops, 5 small buttons (the pattern gives no size) and stitch markers (the instructions use 2) — all in the pattern’s list; stitch holders (or scrap yarn) for the underarm stitches, a sewing machine and thread for the cut front, and a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms.
How it is knitted
Body and sleeves are knitted in the round from the bottom up. The body starts with 7 rows of black moss stitch, knitted back and forth on 4 mm; then 2 purl stitches are cast on at the front for the steek and the work is joined on 4.5 mm. Three bands of stranded colourwork — stars, diamonds and small crosses in camel and ash on black — alternate with hazel stripes, each band framed by rounds of rust eyelets (k2tog, yo), and the body is narrowed a little on the way up: 4 stitches at the side markers after the first band, 10 spread evenly round after the second (and, in XS and L, 2 on the back after the third). The short sleeves start with a black moss-stitch cuff on 4 mm double-pointed needles and carry one band. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke, which continues the stripes, bands and eyelet rows, with five decrease rounds. The neckband is 5 rows of black moss stitch on 3.5 mm. The front is machine-sewn and cut open, the underarms are grafted, and both fronts get 2 rows of black single crochet — with 5 chain button loops on the right front.
