Good to know

Handtak — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Mustard (9264) and orange (1410) are no longer made. This kit has mimosa (1703) in place of mustard — colour B, drawn yellow in the chart: the small crosses just above the cuff, the dots and the yellow round below the green band, and the first two rounds of the thumb — and apricot (1704) in place of orange — colour H: the orange band in the middle of the hand and the small orange dots in the violet band near the top. Mimosa has the same golden hue as the mustard in the photo but is brighter and cleaner, so the yellow will stand out a little more. Apricot has the same warm hue as the orange in the photo but is a little deeper and more ginger, so that band may look slightly darker (our comparison). You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
What size are they?
One size, given in the pattern as a women’s size. No measurements are printed. By our calculation from the gauge, the hand is about 22 cm (8¾″) round (40 stitches) and the mitten about 24 cm long: 5 cm of rib, then about 19 cm of hand and top. The pattern says to knit 38 chart rounds before the top “or as long as desired” — to make the hand longer or shorter, add or leave out plain rounds in the top colour before the decreases (our suggestion). The thumb, 18 stitches round, can also be lengthened.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes — a lot. The pattern gives no amounts; it says “use leftovers”. Léttlopi comes in 50 g balls and each mitten uses all nine colours, so the kit has one ball of each — 9 balls, 450 g. By our estimate the pair uses only about 70 g in all: about 28 g of black, about 14 g of crimson red for the tops, and 2 to 6 g of each of the other seven colours. Expect about half of the black ball and most of each of the other eight to be left over — enough of most colours for a second pair (our estimate).
How do I shape the top?
The text and the chart don’t agree. The text says to decrease “every other rnd total 8 times”, but the chart decreases on every round, rounds 39 to 46. The first decrease round is *k1, k2tog, k15, skp* twice, and each round after it has 4 stitches fewer, from 40 stitches down to 8. Follow the chart (our reading) — it matches the 46-round chart and the rounded tops in the photos; decreasing every other round would make a longer, more pointed tip. The thumb decreases on every round too, as both its text and its chart show.
Do these mittens match the Hvarf sweater?
The pattern’s black-red set is the same nine colours as Védís Jónsdóttir’s Hvarf sweater (its red version), which we also sell as a kit. Both kits have apricot for the old orange, but our Hvarf kit has golden heather (9426) for the old mustard, while this kit has mimosa, which is closer to the yellow in the mittens photo. If you want the mittens to match a Hvarf sweater, choose golden heather in the colour picker.
Which photo shows this version?
The first photo — the mittens with the crimson red tops. The other photo shows the black-moss version, in browns, greys, stone blue and rust with a moor top; it is sold as a separate kit. The orange sweater cuff in that photo is not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles; 4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. Scrap yarn for the thumb is not included.
