Handtak — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Black-red: black (0059), lagoon (9423), heaven blue (1402), violet (1414), crimson (9434), pink (1412) and spring green (1406) are still made by Ístex; mustard (9264) and orange (1410) are not. Black-moss: black, ash (0054), murky (1420), frostbite (1417), moor (1416), rust (9427), stone blue (9418) and light beige (0086) are still made; mustard is not. Our black-red kit uses 1703 mimosa for mustard — the same golden hue as in the photo but brighter and cleaner — and 1704 apricot for orange — the same warm hue, a little deeper and more ginger. Our black-moss kit uses 1703 mimosa for mustard, close to the golden mustard in the photo, a little brighter and more yellow. Our shop adds “heather” to several of the names and calls 0054 light ash heather and 9434 crimson red, so go by the colour numbers.
How much yarn do I need?
The pattern prints no amounts — it says “use leftovers”. Léttlopi comes in 50 g balls. By our estimate the pair takes about 70 g in all: about 28 g of black, about 14 g of the top colour (F) and 2 to 6 g of each of the other seven, so a pair needs less than one ball of every colour. Our kits have one ball of each — 9 balls.
How do I knit the black-moss pair from the chart?
The chart is printed in the colours of the black-red version. Follow the second code in the key (headed “RED / GREEN”; the materials list calls the two versions black-red and black-moss): A black stays black, the yellow squares (B) are ash, teal (C) murky, blue (D) mustard, violet (E) frostbite, red (F) moor — the solid top and thumb tip — pink (G) rust, orange (H) stone blue and green (I) light beige. Mustard is B in the black-red version and D in the black-moss, so go by the letters.
What size are they?
One size, given in the pattern as a women’s size. No measurements are printed. By our calculation from the gauge, the hand is about 22 cm (8¾″) round (40 stitches) and the mitten about 24 cm long: 5 cm of rib, then about 19 cm of hand and top. The pattern says to knit 38 chart rounds before the top “or as long as desired” — to make the hand longer or shorter, add or leave out plain rounds in the top colour before the decreases (our suggestion). The thumb, 18 stitches round, is knitted for 14 rounds “or as long as desired” before its decreases.
How do I shape the top?
The text and the chart don’t agree. The text says to decrease “every other rnd total 8 times”, but the chart decreases on every round, rounds 39 to 46. The first decrease round is *k1, k2tog, k15, skp* twice, and each round after it has 4 stitches fewer, from 40 stitches down to 8. Follow the chart (our reading) — it matches the 46-round chart and the rounded tops in the photos; decreasing every other round would make a longer, more pointed tip. The thumb decreases on every round too, as both its text and its chart show.
Which photo shows which version?
The first photo shows the black-moss pair, with the moor tops; the orange sweater cuff in it is not part of the pattern. The second shows the black-red pair, with the crimson tops; the dark sleeve below the cuff is not part of the pattern. Both are in the pattern’s original colours.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo of both versions, the materials for both, the size, the gauge and all the instructions; a page with the hand and thumb charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
