Good to know

Hamingja — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Orange (1410) and sun yellow (1411) are no longer made. This kit has apricot (1704) in place of orange — colour G — and mimosa (1703) in place of sun yellow — colour H. As everything is knitted with two strands together, they change two blends: the golden stripe across the body and sleeves (G+H, now apricot + mimosa) and the red-orange band in the yoke (E+G, now garnet red + apricot). Apricot is a warm ginger orange, darker than the old orange; mimosa is a warm golden yellow, close to the old sun yellow. So the golden stripe will be a little deeper and more amber than in the photo, and the yoke band clearly deeper and browner — nearer rust than red-orange. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Six sizes — XS to XXL — with a chest of 82, 88, 95, 102, 108 and 115 cm. It is wider at the hem, 102 to 135 cm, and narrows towards the chest. It is 48 to 58 cm from hem to underarm — hip length on the model in the photo — with sleeves of 45 to 50 cm to the underarm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for XXL: 4 balls of lapis blue heather; 3 each of heaven blue heather, navy blue, lagoon heather, garnet red and apricot; and 2 each of pink heather, mimosa and light ash heather — 25 balls. XS and S use 20 balls, M 21, L 24 and XL 25. The pattern calls light ash heather (0054) simply “ash”.
What does “two strands” mean?
Every stitch is knitted with two strands of Léttlopi at once, one from each of two balls, held together as if they were one yarn. That is why the cardigan is knitted on 6.5 mm needles at 12 stitches to 10 cm, and why each stripe looks blended. The one unclear spot is the inside facing of the neckband: the pattern says “cont only with A” there but doesn’t say whether with one strand or two; one strand gives a thinner fold (our suggestion).
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The hem is knitted back and forth, then two purl stitches are cast on at the front and the body is knitted in the round. At the end you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches, cut between the sewn rows and sew in the zip with matching thread — first from the right side along the folded edge, then slip-stitching the edge from the wrong side.
Which zip and cord do I need?
A two-way separating zip — the pattern says “zipper with 2 slides” but gives no length. By our calculation the front edge is roughly 66 cm (XS) to 80 cm (XXL) from the hem to the neckband; measure your finished cardigan before you buy the zip. The top of the zip tape is hidden inside the folded neckband. The cord is threaded through two eyelets in the neckband and knotted at both ends; the pattern gives no length or kind — in the photo it is a bright blue cord. Neither the zip nor the cord is included.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two things. The 6½ mm double-pointed needles are printed as US 10; they are US 10½, as the circular needles say. And in the yoke chart, rounds 28 and 34 have one decrease fewer than there are 8-stitch repeats — one section of the chart has none — so if you decrease in every repeat you end up 1 stitch short. Follow the chart and the printed stitch counts (our reading). Rounds marked “skip” beside the chart are left out in the sizes named.
What does the kit with needles include?
6.5 mm (US 10½) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; a 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needle in 80 cm; a 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 40 cm; 5.5 mm and 6.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The zip and the cord are not included.
