Hálka — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Mountain blue (1415) Bulky Lopi is no longer made — and today Ístex makes Bulky Lopi only in natural shades, with no blue at all. This kit has dark grey heather (0058) in its place. It is colour B: the background of the pattern band and the whole crown. So your hat will be white and dark grey, not white and blue as in the photo. Dark grey heather keeps the dark-on-white contrast and the heathered look, but it is grey, not blue. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
What size is it?
One size, M/L. The pattern prints no measurements. By the gauge, the 50 stitches make a hat about 50 cm round, and it is about 21 cm high with the 8 cm rib turned up as in the photo (our calculation). The pattern doesn’t say to fold the rib — wear it either way.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the 2 hanks the pattern asks for — one of white and one of dark grey heather. The white also makes the pom-pom.
Is there a mistake in the crown?
Yes, in the first decrease round. As printed — *K1, slip1, K1, psso, K3*, ending with K 2 — it leaves 42 stitches, not 40. Work *K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K2* ten times instead (our fix) to get 40; the other decrease rounds then come out as printed: 30, 20, 10 and 5 stitches.
How do I make the pom-pom?
The pattern says to make round templates 8.5 cm across with a 3 cm hole in the middle and make one big pom-pom in white. It refers to pom-pom instructions on page 3, but that page is blank. Our method (not from the pattern): cut two such rings from card, hold them together, wind white yarn round them until the hole is full, cut along the outer edge between the rings, tie a strand tightly between them, then pull or cut the card away and trim the pom-pom. The card is not included.
Is the sweater in the photo included?
No — Hálka is only the hat. The blue sweater is not part of this pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
7 mm and 8 mm (US 11) circular needles in 40 cm; 8 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. Card for the pom-pom templates is not included.
