Good to know

Hálka — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
White (0051) is still made by Ístex. Mountain blue (1415) Jöklalopi is no longer made, and today Ístex makes Jöklalopi only in natural shades — white, greys, browns and black — with no blue at all. Our kit for this pattern uses dark grey heather (0058) in its place, so the kit hat is white and dark grey, not white and blue as in the photo. The Léttlopi with the same number, 1415 rough sea, is a much thinner yarn, not the one in this pattern.
What size is it?
One size, M/L. The pattern prints no measurements. By the gauge, the 50 stitches make a hat about 50 cm round, and it is about 21 cm high with the 8 cm rib turned up as in the photo (our calculation). The pattern doesn’t say to fold the rib — wear it either way.
How much yarn do I need?
Jöklalopi, which the pattern calls Bulky Lopi, in 100 g hanks: 1 hank of white (A) and 1 of mountain blue (B). The white also makes the pom-pom.
Is there a mistake in the crown?
Yes, in the first decrease round. As printed — *K1, slip1, K1, psso, K3*, ending with K 2 — it leaves 42 stitches, not 40. Work *K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K2* ten times instead (our fix) to get 40; the other decrease rounds then come out as printed: 30, 20, 10 and 5 stitches.
How do I make the pom-pom?
The pattern says to make round templates 8.5 cm across with a 3 cm hole in the middle and make one big pom-pom in white. It refers to pom-pom instructions on page 3, but that page is blank. Our method (not from the pattern): cut two such rings from card, hold them together, wind white yarn round them until the hole is full, cut along the outer edge between the rings, tie a strand tightly between them, then pull or cut the card away and trim the pom-pom.
Is the sweater in the photo part of the pattern?
No — Hálka is only the hat. The blue V-neck sweater, the white T-shirt under it and the dark grey knitted sleeve at the right edge are not part of this pattern. By our reading the sweaters are Húm, a V-neck sweater in the same book (Lopi 26, no. 9): the Húm photo shows the same woman in the same blue sweater and this hat, next to a man in the grey version.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, gauge, all the instructions and the chart, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
