Good to know

Gná — your questions, answered

Why are both colours different from the pattern?
Rose heather (9428) and berry heather (9429) are no longer made, so the whole sweater changes colour. This kit has royal fuchsia (1705) in place of rose heather — colour A, the main colour: rib, body, sleeves, cable, yoke and neck — and violet heather (1414) in place of berry heather — colour B, the 10 cm band across the chest and sleeves. In the photos the sweater is a muted, dusty plum. Royal fuchsia is the closest Léttlopi made today, but it is clearly brighter and more magenta, so your sweater will be a bright pink-purple, not a soft plum. Violet heather is a dark purple heather: the band stays darker than the body, as in the photos, but it is clearly bluer and a little duller than the plum berry band, so band and body will no longer be one hue. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 91, 96 and 100 cm, 40 to 43 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 47 to 48 cm to the underarm. There is no XL. The pattern gives no total length; the raglan yoke adds roughly 18 to 20 cm above the underarm before the neck rib (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for L: 8 balls of royal fuchsia and 2 of violet heather — 10 balls. S and M use 7 balls of royal fuchsia (9 in all).
How is the cable knitted?
From an 8-round chart over 22 stitches: 2 purl stitches, an 18-stitch braid and 2 purl stitches. In round 3, three cables cross over the 18 stitches with the stitches held behind (right crosses); in round 7, two cables cross over the middle 12 with the stitches held in front (left crosses) — all 3 over 3. You need a cable needle; it is not in the pattern’s materials list and not in the kit. The cable stops after 18 (18) 20 of the 20 (20) 22 raglan decreases, so the last 2 decrease rounds before the neck are plain.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The rib panel at the centre back is 1 stitch off centre — in S there are 26 stitches before it and 27 after; that is how it is written, and it doesn’t show in wear (our reading). The sleeve band starts at 32 (33) 34 cm and is knitted “same length as on body”, which is 10 cm. In M and L that puts the sleeve band 1 cm (M) or 2 cm (L) higher than the body band where they meet at the underarm (our calculation); to line them up, start the sleeve band at 32 cm in every size (our suggestion). The 3½ mm needles are printed as US 3; they are US 4. And the materials list leaves out the cable needle, stitch markers, stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Which photos show this version?
The woman on the wooden pier and the back view show this version in its original rose heather and berry heather; the back view shows the rib panel at the centre back. The orange sweater is the pattern’s other version, sold as a separate kit (its orange is no longer made either, so that kit has apricot).
What does the kit with needles include?
A 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 80 cm; 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern does not say which needles to use for the neck rib; by our reading the 3.5 mm double-pointed needles, as 74 to 78 stitches are too few for the 80 cm circular. The cable needle is not included.
