  • One large snowflake in the centre, ringed by smaller ones: festive without a single Santa or reindeer

  • Easy to live with: air it out between uses and it rarely needs a wash

Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • Fleece made for Icelandic wintersIcelandic sheep grow a two-layer fleece: long outer fibres that shrug off damp and soft inner fibres that trap heat. That is the wool in this blanket.
  • A snowflake by Védís JónsdóttirPattern no. 0303, which Ístex calls Jólarós — the Christmas rose. Védís also designed our Ægissíða landscape blanket.
  • Woven in, not printed onIt is a jacquard: the snowflakes are made by the red and cream yarns themselves as the cloth is woven, so the pattern is part of the blanket, not a print on top.
  • A gift that needs no explainingRed, snowflakes and Icelandic wool say Christmas and Iceland at a glance — and it is useful the day it is unwrapped.

Questions people ask before they buy

Why is it called Frostrose — and what is Jólarós?
Jólarós is the blanket’s Icelandic name, given by Ístex; it means “Christmas rose”. Frostrose is the name we sell it under in English. Both describe the same red pattern no. 0303 by Védís Jónsdóttir.
Is it big enough to cover a bed?
It is 130 × 180 cm, about 51 × 71 inches. That is a large throw: two people on a sofa, or the foot of a double bed. It is not a full bed cover.
What is the wool like to touch?
Springy and full, with the natural texture of Icelandic wool rather than the slip of merino. It is at its best over you on the sofa or spread over the duvet on a cold night.
Does it have a fringe?
No. Frostrose has a neat stitched edge all the way round, so there are no tassels to tangle, catch or comb out.
