Overview
What's in the kit
Fjúk — drifting snow. A hat and scarf from Ístex’s Lopi 25, both knitted in black tweed Álafosslopi and fulled in the washing machine: a hat with a turned-down brim and a band of purl ridges, and a long, narrow garter-stitch scarf with a big white pompom at each end.
Included
- Icelandic Álafosslopi and Léttlopi wool yarn — 5 balls, all the pattern calls for, for both the hat and the scarf
- Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase
- ADDI knitting needles — only if you choose the kit with needles
Álafosslopi — 100 g balls · hat and scarf
A 9975 Black Tweed — 4
Léttlopi — 50 g balls · hat and scarf
B 0051 White — 1
Size
One size. The hat is given in the pattern as a women’s size, with no measurements. The scarf is 240 cm long and 8 cm wide when finished (94½″ × 3¼″).
Gauge
14 sts × 20 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles, before fulling (hat). The pattern gives no gauge for the scarf.
Needles used in the pattern (included when you choose the kit with needles)
Hat: 5 mm (US 8) circular needle, 40 cm, and 5 mm double-pointed needles
Scarf: 6 mm (US 10) needles — the kit with needles has a 6 mm circular needle in 80 cm, used back and forth
Not included
A laundry bag (washing pouch) for fulling in the washing machine, and card for two pompom templates.
How it is knitted
Both pieces are fulled (felted) in the washing machine at 40°C. The hat is knitted in the round from the brim up on 5 mm: a doubled brim that widens to a purl fold line and is slip-stitched inside, a 12-round band of purl ridges, then a stocking-stitch crown decreased to the top and drawn together. The scarf is 13 stitches of garter stitch knitted back and forth on 6 mm to 220 cm. After fulling, a big white Léttlopi pompom is sewn to each end.
Design: Védís Jónsdóttir; the hat is based on an old pattern by Gerd Paulsen — pattern from Lopi No. 25 (no. 17), Ístex.
