Fjúk — drifting snow. A hat and a scarf from Ístex’s Lopi 25, both knitted in black tweed Álafosslopi and fulled (felted) in the washing machine: a hat with a doubled, turned-down brim and a band of purl ridges, and a long, narrow garter-stitch scarf with a big white Léttlopi pompom at each end. Both pieces are in this one pattern, each with its own materials list. Design: Védís Jónsdóttir; the hat is based on an old pattern by Gerd Paulsen.

Size
One size. The hat is given in the pattern as a women’s size, with no measurements. The scarf is 240 cm long and 8 cm wide when finished (94½″ × 3¼″).
Gauge
14 sts × 20 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles, before fulling (hat). The pattern gives no gauge for the scarf.
Needles
Hat: 5 mm (US 8) circular needle, 40 cm, and 5 mm double-pointed needles
Scarf: 6 mm (US 10) needles — the pattern does not say which kind; the scarf is knitted back and forth
You will also need
A washing pouch (laundry bag) for fulling both pieces in the washing machine, and card for two pompom templates, 8.5 cm across with a 3 cm hole. Neither is in the materials list.
How it is knitted
Both pieces are fulled (felted) in a washing pouch in the washing machine at 40°C. The hat is knitted in the round from the brim up on 5 mm: 82 stitches cast on, increased to 106 over 8 rounds, a purl round, then 11 rounds decreased back to 82 — the doubled brim, which is folded back along the purl round and slip-stitched in place. Next comes a 12-round band of purl ridges, then a stocking-stitch crown, decreased 8 stitches every other round seven times and drawn together at the top. After fulling, the crown is shaped and the brim laid flat to dry. The scarf is 13 stitches of garter stitch knitted back and forth on 6 mm to 220 cm, cast off, fulled and laid flat to dry; the pattern notes that garter stitch stretches lengthwise and gives the finished scarf as 240 cm. Last, two big white Léttlopi pompoms, made on card templates, are sewn to the ends.
Design: Védís Jónsdóttir; the hat is based on an old pattern by Gerd Paulsen — pattern from Lopi No. 25 (no. 17), Ístex.
