Good to know

Fiðrildaslóð — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Sun yellow (1411) is no longer made. This kit has mimosa (1703) in its place. In the red version it is both colour C and colour E — the lower wings of every butterfly. In Ístex’s photo of the red cardigan (lying beside the Skotta dress) the butterflies are a clear warm yellow; mimosa, the warm golden yellow in Léttlopi today, is close to it. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Is there a photo of the red version?
Yes — the leaflet shows only the blue version (also sold as a kit), but Ístex photographed the red cardigan lying beside the matching Skotta dress; that photo is the first one on this page. The red one has a crimson red body and sleeves, a black yoke, and butterflies with mimosa lower wings and white upper wings. In the chart key the red version has only four colours: C and E are both the yellow, and D and F both white.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 2, 3–4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 63, 68, 74 and 79 cm, 21 to 30 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 24 to 33 cm. It is a little wider at the hem than at the chest: 69 to 88 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 8 years: 5 balls of crimson red, 2 of black and one each of mimosa and white — 9 balls. Size 2 uses 6 balls, 3–4 uses 8 and 6 uses 9.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each of them by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. Both fronts are then finished with 2 rows of single crochet over the machine stitching — in the body colour below the yoke and the yoke colour on the yoke.
How does it fasten?
With 5–7 button loops of 3 chains, crocheted into the second row of the right front border — the first at the top of the yoke, the last 2 cm above the hem, the others evenly between — and small buttons on the left front. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons and the 3.5 mm crochet hook are not included.
What is the “golden yarn”?
The pattern embroiders the butterflies’ bodies and antennae in the red version with “golden yarn”, but gives no code or amount, so it is not in the kit. Any fine gold or yellow yarn or thread will do; one strand split from leftover mimosa is one option (our suggestion). The bodies are worked in duplicate stitch and the antennae in backstitch, as marked on the chart.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
One misprint and a few small things. Round 31 of the yoke chart is printed “94 (99) 104 (109) sts”; it should read 88 (93) 98 (103). The chart decreases 16 (17) 18 (19) stitches in that round, and the printed final count, 70 (74) 78 (82), only follows from the corrected numbers (our arithmetic). At round 27, our count of the chart gives one stitch more than the printed 104 (110) 116 (122); knit to the chart and decrease one stitch more in the first neckband round. In the eyelet rib, “Rep row 1–4, 2 (2) 3 (3) times” means work rows 1–4 once and then repeat them 2 (2) 3 (3) times — 3 (3) 4 (4) times in all, for the 6 (6) 8 (8) holes the pattern mentions; on the sleeves, rounds 1–4 are worked 2 (2) 3 (3) times in all. And the chart notes write size 3–4 as “(4)”.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 40 cm; 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 3.5 mm crochet hook, the buttons and the golden embroidery yarn are not included.
