Good to know

Fiðrildaslóð — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Most of them. In the blue version, lapis blue (1403), white (0051), crimson red (9434), spring green (1406) and heaven blue (1402) are still made by Ístex; orange (1410) is not. In the red version, crimson red (9434), black (0059) and white (0051) are still made; sun yellow (1411) is not. Our blue kit uses 1704 apricot in place of orange — a warm ginger orange, a little browner and darker than the bright orange in the photo — and our red kit uses 1703 mimosa in place of sun yellow, a warm golden yellow, close to the yellow in the photo. Our shop calls 1403, 1406 and 1402 lapis blue heather, spring green heather and heaven blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Is there a photo of the red version?
Not in this leaflet — its photo shows the blue version. But Ístex photographed the red cardigan lying on grass beside the matching red Skotta dress, a separate pattern (Lopi 27 no. 2); that photo is the second photo on this page, shown in full (the Skotta leaflet crops it to the dress, so little of the cardigan shows there). It shows the red version in the pattern’s original colours: a crimson red body, a black yoke, and butterflies with white upper wings and yellow lower wings.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 2, 3–4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 63, 68, 74 and 79 cm, 21, 24, 27 and 30 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 24, 27, 30 and 33 cm to the underarm. It is a little wider at the hem than at the chest: 69, 74, 82 and 88 cm. The body’s 113 to 143 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished cardigan’s measurement all the way round. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Blue: lapis blue (1403) 3 (4, 5, 5), white (0051) 1 (2, 2, 2) and one ball each of orange, crimson red, spring green and heaven blue — 8 (10, 11, 11) balls. Red: crimson red (9434) 3 (4, 5, 5), black (0059) 1 (2, 2, 2) and one ball each of sun yellow and white — 6 (8, 9, 9) balls — plus the “golden yarn” for the embroidery, for which the pattern gives no code or amount.
How do I knit the red version from the chart?
The chart is drawn in the blue version’s colours, and the key gives two codes for each square, blue first and red second: A is 1403 lapis blue or 9434 crimson red, B 0051 white or 0059 black, C 1410 orange or 1411 sun yellow, D 9434 crimson red or 0051 white, E 1406 spring green or 1411 sun yellow, and F 1402 heaven blue or 0051 white. So in the red version C and E are both sun yellow — the lower wings of every butterfly — and D and F are both white, the upper wings; it has only four colours.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The round begins and ends with a purl stitch at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each column of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. Both fronts are then finished with 2 rows of single crochet over the machine stitching — in A below the yoke and in B on the yoke — with 5–7 loops of 3 chains on the right front: the first at the top of the yoke, the last 2 cm above the hem, the others evenly between. The pattern gives no button size.
How are the butterflies’ bodies made?
They are embroidered after the knitting, as marked on the chart: the bodies in duplicate stitch and the antennae in backstitch. For the blue version the pattern says to split the yarn into two strands and embroider with one — green and blue bodies in the first and third tiers, red and orange ones in the second. For the red version it says to embroider them with “golden yarn” and gives no code or amount.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
One misprint and a few small things. Round 31 of the yoke chart is printed “94 (99) 104 (109) sts”; it should read 88 (93) 98 (103). The chart decreases 16 (17) 18 (19) stitches in that round, and the printed final count, 70 (74) 78 (82), only follows from the corrected numbers (our arithmetic). At round 27, our count of the chart gives one stitch more than the printed 104 (110) 116 (122); knit to the chart and decrease one stitch more in the first neckband round. In the eyelet rib, “Rep row 1–4, 2 (2) 3 (3) times” means work rows 1–4 once and then repeat them 2 (2) 3 (3) times — 3 (3) 4 (4) times in all, for the 6 (6) 8 (8) holes the pattern mentions; on the sleeves, rounds 1–4 are worked 2 (2) 3 (3) times in all. The chart notes write size 3–4 as “(4)”. And the materials list leaves out stitch holders, a sewing machine and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are. In the blue photo, the girl’s red top and the blue knitted garment under the cardigan (seen at the front opening and below the hem) are not. In the red photo, the Skotta dress, the white top with lace cuffs under it and the small white flowers on the grass are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (the blue version); a page with a small photo, the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge and all the instructions; a page with the yoke chart and the colour key for both versions; and Ístex’s back cover.
