Fiðrildaslóð — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Orange (1410) is no longer made, and Léttlopi has no true orange today. This kit has apricot (1704) in its place — colour C: the lower wings of the butterflies in the first and third tiers, and some of the embroidered bodies. Apricot is a warm ginger orange, a little browner and darker than the bright orange in the photo. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 2, 3–4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 63, 68, 74 and 79 cm, 21 to 30 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 24 to 33 cm. It is a little wider at the hem than at the chest: 69 to 88 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 8 years: 5 balls of lapis blue, 2 of white and one each of apricot, crimson red, spring green and heaven blue — 11 balls. Size 2 uses 8 balls, 3–4 uses 10 and 6 uses 11. The pattern calls lapis blue heather, spring green heather and heaven blue heather simply lapis blue, spring green and heaven blue.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each of them by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. Both fronts are then finished with 2 rows of single crochet over the machine stitching — in the body colour below the yoke and the yoke colour on the yoke.
How does it fasten?
With 5–7 button loops of 3 chains, crocheted into the second row of the right front border — the first at the top of the yoke, the last 2 cm above the hem, the others evenly between — and small buttons on the left front. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons and the 3.5 mm crochet hook are not included.
How are the butterflies’ bodies made?
They are embroidered after the knitting, as marked on the chart: the bodies in duplicate stitch and the antennae in backstitch. The pattern says to split the yarn into two strands and embroider with one. In the first and third tiers the butterflies get green and blue bodies, in the second tier red and orange ones (apricot in this kit).
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
One misprint and a few small things. Round 31 of the yoke chart is printed “94 (99) 104 (109) sts”; it should read 88 (93) 98 (103). The chart decreases 16 (17) 18 (19) stitches in that round, and the printed final count, 70 (74) 78 (82), only follows from the corrected numbers (our arithmetic). At round 27, our count of the chart gives one stitch more than the printed 104 (110) 116 (122); knit to the chart and decrease one stitch more in the first neckband round. In the eyelet rib, “Rep row 1–4, 2 (2) 3 (3) times” means work rows 1–4 once and then repeat them 2 (2) 3 (3) times — 3 (3) 4 (4) times in all, for the 6 (6) 8 (8) holes the pattern mentions; on the sleeves, rounds 1–4 are worked 2 (2) 3 (3) times in all. And the chart notes write size 3–4 as “(4)”.
Which version is in the photo?
This one — the girl in the lapis blue cardigan with the white yoke. The red version (crimson red with a black yoke) is sold as a separate kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 40 cm; 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 3.5 mm crochet hook and the buttons are not included.
