Védís Jónsdóttir’s Fés from Ístex’s Lopi 29 in its blue version: a children’s round-yoke sweater in Lapis blue heather Léttlopi, with three rows of little white faces with black eyes and mouths in the yoke, and a matching border above the hem and cuffs.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. Hem and cuffs are K1, P1 rib on 3.5 mm, followed on 4.5 mm by a 9-round border. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — a 39-round chart of three rows of faces, smaller towards the neck, with five decrease rounds. In this version the faces are white with black eyes and mouths on a black band. The neckband is single-layer K1, P1 rib, and the underarm stitches are grafted.

Which size should I knit?

Three sizes, to fit 6, 8 and 10 years — a chest of 75, 80 and 84 cm, 30 to 36 cm from hem to underarm and sleeves of 32 to 38 cm.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for size 10: 6 balls of Lapis blue and 2 each of black and white — 10 balls. Size 6 uses 8.

Is the neckband folded?

No — it is a single layer of K1, P1 rib, finished with a few rounds in a second colour.

The chart is printed in grey colours — how do I knit the blue version?

Follow the chart key for the blue version: the dark grey squares are knitted in Lapis blue, the light grey, white and red squares all in black, and the black squares in white. The boy in the blue sweater in the photos wears this version.

What does the kit with needles include?

4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the longer circulars as 60–80 cm; the kit has the 60 cm length.
