Good to know

Fés — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All six are still made by Ístex: grey (0057), ash (0054), black (0059), white (0051) and crimson (9434) for the grey version, and lapis blue (1403), black and white for the blue one. Our shop calls them grey heather, light ash heather, black, white, crimson red and lapis blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, ages 6, 8 and 10 — a chest of 75, 80 and 84 cm, 30, 33 and 36 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 32, 35 and 38 cm to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s chest, not the child’s. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Grey: grey (A) 4 (5, 6), ash (B) 1 (1, 2), black (C) 2, white (D) 1 and crimson (E) 1 in every size — 9 (10, 12) balls. Blue: lapis blue (A) 4 (5, 6), black (B) 2 and white (C) 2 — 8 (9, 10) balls.
The charts are printed in grey colours — how do I knit the blue version?
Use the key’s second column, “BLUE”. The dark grey squares are knitted in lapis blue; the light grey, white and red squares all in black; and the black squares in white. So the faces come out white with black eyes and mouths, on black, and the border becomes a white band with black dots. The letters change too: in the blue version black is B and white is C.
Is the neckband folded?
No. It is a single layer: 6 rounds of K1, P1 rib in A and 4 in B, bound off very loosely in rib. B is ash in the grey version and black in the blue one, so the blue sweater has a black neck edge, as in the photo.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things. The materials list leaves out stitch holders for the underarm stitches. And the neckband says “Change to 3½ mm needles”: the only 3.5 mm circular in the list is 60–80 cm, too long for 66 to 70 stitches, so by our reading the neckband goes on the 3.5 mm double-pointed needles.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are. The jeans both boys wear are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the grey version; a page with photos of both versions, the materials for both, the sizes, gauge, all the instructions, both charts and the colour key; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
