Description

Védís Jónsdóttir’s Faðmur — embrace — from Ístex’s Einband pattern series: a lace wrap cardigan in fine Einband, knitted as one long piece. Feather-and-fan lace fronts shade from oatmeal to white, the white back has rows of eyelets and garter ridges, and the ¾ sleeves end in the same shading.

How it is knitted
One long rectangle knitted back and forth from one front end to the other. Each front is feather-and-fan lace that shades from oatmeal heather through beige heather and light beige heather to white (in the pattern’s names: oatmeal, light beige, ivory beige); the back, in white, is rows of eyelets and garter ridges, with two armholes made over scrap yarn. The ¾ sleeves are picked up at the armholes and knitted down in the round, ending in the same shading. A crochet edge keeps the back straight. Worn, the fronts hang open and drape.

Which size should I knit?

Two sizes, S/M and L/XL. The piece is 178 (187) cm from end to end and 48 (57) cm wide; it wraps round the shoulders with the fronts hanging open.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for L/XL: 7 balls of white and one each of light beige, beige and oatmeal heather — 10 balls. S/M uses 8. The pattern’s names are ivory beige, light beige and oatmeal.

How long are the sleeves?

¾ length. The pattern gives no sleeve length and says to add repeats if you want them longer; by the gauge they are about 40.5 (43.5) cm (our calculation).

Is it hard to knit?

Feather and fan is a four-row lace with only one patterned row. The pattern asks you to take care when purling to keep the stitch orientation correct, and warns that the work stretches when washed and blocked. Around the armholes you may need to add or drop a row so the lace rows stay on the right side — the pattern does not say.

What does the kit with needles include?

A 4 mm (US 6) circular needle in 80 cm; a 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 80 cm for the cast-on and bind-off; 4 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 3.5 mm crochet hook is not included.
