Faðmur — embrace. Védís Jónsdóttir’s wrap cardigan from Ístex’s Einband pattern series, knitted in fine Einband as one long piece, from one end to the other, with ¾ sleeves picked up at the armholes and knitted down. The two long fronts are feather-and-fan lace that shades from white through ivory beige and light beige to oatmeal at the scalloped ends; the white back between them has rows of eyelets and garter-stitch ridges. One colourway, in sizes S/M and L/XL, with no buttons or other fastening.

Gauge
Blocked: one feather-and-fan repeat of 25 sts × 4 rows = 9.5 × 1.5 cm on 4 mm needles.
Needles
4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 80 cm — the whole wrap is knitted back and forth on it
5 mm (US 8) circular needle, 80 cm, only for the very loose cast-on and bind-offs
4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles for the sleeves
You will also need
A 3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook for the edge along the back (in the pattern’s list), scrap yarn in a different colour for the two armholes, and a tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
How it is knitted
One long rectangle knitted back and forth on a 4 mm circular, from one front end to the other. It starts with a very loose cast-on of 131 (156) stitches in oatmeal (D) on the 5 mm needle. The first front is feather and fan — four rows, one of them the lace row — with 3 edge stitches in garter stitch at each side: the first repeat and 3 more in oatmeal, 3 in light beige (C), 2 in ivory beige (B), then 27 (29) in white (A), “or as long as preferred”. After one row of stocking stitch, the back, all in white, alternates an eyelet pattern (yarn over, K2tog) with garter-stitch ridges, and the two armholes are knitted over a piece of scrap yarn. The second front mirrors the first — white, ivory beige, light beige, oatmeal — and is bound off very loosely purlwise on the 5 mm needle. For the sleeves the scrap yarn is taken out and 75 (100) stitches are picked up round each armhole on 4 mm double-pointed needles; each sleeve is knitted down in the round: 2 garter ridges, an eyelet round, then feather and fan, 16 (18) repeats in white and the same shading to oatmeal at the cuff. Last, single crochet in white along the lower edge of the back keeps it straight, and the wrap is rinsed by hand and laid flat to dry, stretched carefully.
